Suspense abounds in this gripping new thriller from "New York Times" bestselling author Sandra Brown, in which a successful magazine editor is trapped in her remote cabin with a man believed to be a serial killer.
Cleary, North Carolina, is a sleepy mountain town -- the kind of place where criminal activity is usually limited to parking violations. Not so, lately. Four women have disappeared from Cleary over the past two years. And there's always a blue ribbon left near the spot where each of the women was last seen. There are no bodies, no other clues, and no suspicion as to who their abductor might be. And now, another woman has disappeared without a trace.
It is to this backdrop that Lilly Martin returns to close the sale of her mountain cabin, marking the end of her turbulent eight-year marriage to Dutch Burton, Cleary's chief of police. Dutch's reluctance to let her go isn't Lilly's only obstacle. As she's trying to outrun a snowstorm, her car skids on the icy road and strikes a man who emerges from the woods on foot. She recognizes the injured man as Ben Tierney, whom she'd met the previous summer. They're forced to wait out the storm in the cabin, but as the hours of their confinement mount, Lilly begins to wonder if the greatest danger to her safety isn't the blizzard outside, but the mysterious man right beside her.
Is Ben Tierney the feared abductor? Or is he who he claims to be...her rescuer from harm and from the tragedy that haunts her?
The compelling characters, sexual tension, and stunning plot twists in Sandra Brown's "Chill Factor" combine to create a page-turner that will keep readers guessing until the very end.

In this romantic thriller, Lilly Martin is in the small North Carolina town of Cleary, emptying her mountain cabin, which has been sold because of her recent divorce from the town's chief of police, Dutch Burton. Caught in a snowstorm on the mountain, Lilly runs into (literally) Ben Tierney as she tries to drive down to safety. Leaving the wrecked car in a ditch, the two make it back up the hill to her cabin, where they are stranded.

The situation down in Cleary is tense: five women have mysteriously disappeared in the last two years. Gradually, suspicion focuses on Ben as a "person of interest", with many of the residents, including Dutch, considering him already convicted. Cleary is a strange town, full of maladjusted individuals: Dutch is an alcoholic who was fired from the Atlanta Police Department; his best friend is Wes Hamer, the high school football coach who is abusing his son while trying to relive his high school glory days.

The FBI agents who show up to talk to Ben are rather unusual to say the least. Brown weaves all these vivid characters together into a spell-binding mosaic, while making us care about what happens to Lilly and Ben. Stephen Lang's narration is top-notch; his rendition of Dutch and Wes's "good ol' boy" conversations are priceless. Highly recommended for all adult fiction collections.

Review by Library Journal (2005-08-01)

Women have been mysteriously disappearing from the small mountain community of Cleary, NC, and a massive winter snowstorm has trapped Lilly Martin in a mountain cabin with the prime suspect, Ben Tierney. Lilly's ex-husband, local police chief Dutch Burton, is intent on rescuing her, but the cabin's remote location and the intensity of the storm significantly delay his efforts. Meanwhile, Lilly finds herself attracted to the charismatic Tierney. Both have dark secrets in their past, and they identify with each other despite Lilly's suspicion that Tierney is behind the disappearances.

Small-town politics add both comedy and drama to the mix, with an extended cast of characters that includes a drunken sand truck driver, a busybody pharmacist, and the local football coach and his angry teenage son. In her latest (after White Hot), Brown offers up her usual blend of steamy romance and suspense, as well as an entertaining subplot featuring the town's outwardly prudish high school English teacher. Recommended for most public libraries.
