About the Album

(This CD includes a bonus DVD with four music videos.)

A "Parranda Tequilera" (A Tequila Party) can be construed to mean many different things. More commonly, it can be a celebratory party or one where you drink your heartaches away.

Judging from the content of the compilation Parranda Tequilera 2005, this is a tequila fest designed to drown every sadness. The collection, which brings together the best of regional Mexican acts, from Ezequiel Peña and Conjunto Primavera to Los Temerarios and Marco Antonio Solís, is a veritable feast of end-it-all macho fare.

That much can be construed from the opening track, "Sufriendo Penas" (Suffering Sorrows), where Los Temerarios sing: "And I, suffering in the tavern over her love," plaintive vocals over a stylized ranchera accompaniment.

From that point on, Parranda Tequilera alternates between romantic ballads (such as Marco Antonio Solís' "Cuando Te Acuerdes de Mí") to banda (Banda El Recodo's "Yo Sé Que Te Acordarás"), rancheras (Eliseo Robles' "Por Tu Maldito Amor") and norteño (Ezequiel's Peña's "Dos Traiciones"), with lost or impossible love being the unifying theme.

Because of the scarcity of women here, we'll note Yesenia Flores' lovely rendition of "Cuestión Olvidada," a contrast of spirited mariachi and melodious vocals. Completely different is "Te Perdoné Una Vez," performed by norteño group Los Huracanes del Norte. Here, vocals alternate with accordion to a polka beat that belies the condemnation in the lyrics ("I forgave one time, the next, but this time I don't want you to come back"). For a similar sound, go to Chuy Vega's "Tengo Celos," another track heavy on virtuoso accordion, played to Vega's more lyrical tenor.

Sheer romance is represented here in the voice of Los Temerarios, Solís and Eliseo Robles, who closes this set with the classic "De Que Manera te Olvido." He performs it with a balladeer's sensibility, off set by a slight norteño touch.

But there's no matching the gentle, persuasive romance of Solís, who, coincidentally, is the author of four tracks here. He only sings one, the nostalgic "Cuando Te Acuerdes de Mí," a sweet ballad with gentle string and guitar accompaniment, a flow of catchy, beautiful melodies performed in Solís' signature, emotive voice.

This is the part of the Parranda where you simply cry, or you find someone else and slow dance.
