About the Album

Reggaetón, once an underground movement popular only in Puerto Rico, has become the hottest Latin music genre in the market today. Irreverent and close to the streets, it bears striking similarities with rap and hip-hop back in the day when they began their rise from underground, indie movements to mainstream phenoms. And, while reggaetón, with its trademark dancehall beats, is distinctly different from rap or hip-hop, it shares those genres' penchant for collaborations and guest appearances.

Take Chosen Few: El Documental. This CD/DVD set is out on a small indie, CFEE/UBO, and yet, it features some of the biggest names in reggaetón, from Don Omar to Vico C., as well as a group of serious up-and-comers. Likewise, the album vacillates between more playful, or sexual tracks, and cuts that are more dramatic, or take themselves more seriously. Several of these, including the opening "Intro," have been written specifically for this compilation and purport to give listeners a lesson on the essence and history of reggaetón.

But there are also better-known tracks by established acts. Early on, listeners get a sample of this with Don Omar's "Reggaetón Latino," a description of reggaetón's danceable qualities, aggressively rapped and set over a dramatic loop.

You might argue that much of reggaetón sounds the same; the beats are virtually identical, which leads to one track melting into the next. But on Chosen Few, the problem is resolved by the variety of voices. The more lyrical "Hoy," for example, is by L.D.A. featuring a female vocal by Cheka, whose deep alto, singing over a rumba beat, provides extra texture to the track.

Far peppier is the imminently danceable "No Pierdas Tiempo," featuring Zion y Lennox, a funky mix of Caribbean sounding drum loops and beats. In its reggae tendency, the track exemplifies the very definition of reggaetón. While Zion y Lennox are well-known names on the reggaetón circuit, up and comers include Voltio, whose sound is more urban narrative than pure dancehall. Add in his gritty voice, and his vibe is more rap than reggae.

The granddaddy of this particular compilation is Vico C., featured here with Tego Calderón and Eddie Dee on El Bueno, El Malo y El Feo (Chosen Few Remix), a fleshier track with more insightful lyrics from Vico C., who is known as the poet of rap. Although the song is essentially a lyrical challenge to other rappers, it's clever and well written, convincing in its earnestness.

With its companion DVD, a documentary featuring interviews with many of these acts and others, Chosen Few becomes not just good reggaetón, but a wonderful point of reference for lovers of the genre and neophytes as well.
