At present, it's inarguably good to be D. O. double G. Two years after his well received Paid tha Cost to be da Bo$$, Snoop bolts out of the gate with R&G (Rhythm and Gangsta): The Masterpiece, an album with more charged twists and turns than a NASCAR track. Whether or not any other artist alive could title his album a masterpiece and get away with it (outside of perhaps Dre, his veritable Godfather in rhymes) isn't nearly as significant as the jaw-dropping reality that the album itself merits the name.
Working again with Pharrell Williams and his Neptunes, the album careens occasionally into the (somewhat tryingly) familiar subjects of pimping, thugging, disobedient ladies and, of course, his favorite naturally occurring substance. He gets this out of his system on the album's throwaway collaborations with Soopafly, "Can U Control Yo H**" and "I'm Threw Witchu." Mostly, however, the Neptunes help Snoop carve out exciting new territory for one of rap's favorite sons. From electrified funk that sizzles on contact to surprisingly sensitive and smartly executed ballads, R&G shows just how well maturity and fatherhood suit Snoop. While he'll never let the "G" die altogether, it's clear that he's at least willing to shove that persona in the back seat for most of the ride.
In a career that includes numerous Top 10 hits, R&G's debut single "Drop It Like It's Hot" may just be a career best. With a creamy smooth beat (and the most creative use of a slide whistle to date) and extra cool vocals, both courtesy of the massively gifted Pharrell, with this song Snoop has branded himself the new Dom of cool. Snoop throws down his slow drawl on "The Bidness," an electrified album stand out built with hooks from groovemasters Run-D.M.C. and James Brown. He works in some all-star collaborations, as with dirty south-ers Lil John and Trina on "Step Yo Game Up," and then flashes his sweeter side with a crooning Nelly on "Girl Like U." Of course, no album would be complete without a song about his name -- "Snoop D.O. Double G." not only fills this bill, but it also proves to be one of R&G's greatest grooves.
Where the album truly shines is when Snoop and company bust out the hardcore F-U-N-K. Snoop, who truly owes much of his pimp stance to the blaxploitation era, pulls a bounty of influence from '70s funk. He tries on his falsetto on the subtly philosophical "No Thang On Me," a Hi-Tek produced Curtis Mayfield cover featuring funkmaster Bootsy Collins. He duets with, yes, the Bee Gees, on "Ups and Downs," a song that is fueled by disco's best elements. Two of the album's slickest moments come in the form of duets with R&B singer Charlie Wilson. "Perfect" is an ultra-smooth and sweetly engaging R&B ballad where the Neptunes again flex their expertise. Snoop pairs with Williams and Justin Timberlake for "Signs," a purely fantastic cut that shows just how much Snoop can make a pop song go boom. This album is anything but a forgettable shrug-off from an artist that at this stage of his career could fax it in and still hit his numbers on Billboard. After a decade plus, Snoop has scored one more impressive notch in his formidable legacy.
