How heavy is this thing? Thinking of getting it and mostly upgrading everything to try and get it under 45lbs....think this is possible?

  • A. I got mine down to 3.9 ounces because I filled the gaps in the frame with jellied helium.

  • A. It ships at 51 lbs. I swapped tires/tubes, bars and stem and have it down to 42lbs. A new seatpost, seat and cranks would drop a few more, I'm sure. Drilling the rims would help, too.

  • A. About 50 lbs. Instead of upgrading, do a web search. There are fat bikes with reputable brakes and derailleurs, WITH ALUMINUM FRAMES, that start at $399. The frame will save a lot of weight. Also check the tires and tubes. I am still riding on the original Mongoose tires and tubes but they are heavy.

  • A. the first thing to do is change the tires they weigh almost 3000 grams a piece a good set of tires will save you 6 pounds, I have knocked off as much as 15 pounds of the beast

  • A. The tires and tubes are super heavy. You can cut 10 pounds easy by installing new tires and tubes. Reducing the rotating weight can really improve any bicycle ride. The other super heavy part is the crank. My Beast weighs right at 50 pounds and the Dolomite is basically the same bike with more parts added (brakes, gears, cables, levers) so has to weigh more than that.

  • A. The bike weighs 49 pounds on my scale without the kickstand but with Shimano's 520 SPD's on there. Methinks if you...... 1) Drill out the rims (1.5") double holes per spoke bed 2) Replacing all the steel parts with quality aluminum 3) Replace the ti(y)res with lightweight supple high TPI's 4) Go tubeless or use 2.5" MTN tubes ......you can easily get the bike in the mid/high 30 pound range. As far as money goes, is it worth it? I fortunately have bins and bins of parts to swap out so it will only cost time. The ti(y)res I gotta eat though. Worth.

HI, Please verify what material the Mongoose Dolomite bike frame is constructed from. The specifications state that it is aluminium, but the pictures clearly show a steel frame. Thanks so much.

  • A. Cranks are cast iron and weigh a ton. Brake discs are steel. Brake calipers are aluminum body with steel hardware. "Alloy" is 2 or more elements combined. Steel is made from Iron and Carbon so technically steel is an alloy.

  • A. Zeigenfoot said: " The frame is steel. The wheels are aluminum. That's what they meant by, "Steel/Aluminum."" The notion that any manufacturer would note the material of the rims under frame specs is dumb of them at best and deceptive at worst. They clearly state that the rims are alloy in the rim specs. There is no need to restate these specs so confusingly under other specific specifications. Show me any other instance where the rim material is listed in the frame specs by any manufacturer. Pacific ought to correct this listing and the Massif listing so people understand what they are actually buying. Heck, Pacific Bicycles own pictures that they were spreading around the Web prior to the release of Massif shows it with an aluminum frame and steel fork. Note that Pacific does not list any of their aluminum frame bikes in such an asinine way.

At $299, this is a great bike. No, it's not a "real" fatbike, but it's still a lot of fun. The bike was packaged well. No damage or scratches. It was fairly easy to assemble. The only things that needed adjusting were the brakes and the front hub (it was WAY too tight. The tires/tubes that come on this bike are junk and are WAY too heavy. I replaced them with some "real" fat bike tires and tubes and dropped a LOT of weight. I also replaced the stem and bars with some lighter ones i had laying around. With these slight modifications, this is a perfectly sand/mud-worthy fat bike and is a ton of fun. This is nowhere close to what you'll get spending $1k+ on a real fat bike, but it's somewhere to start. Now my girlfriend has a fat bike to tool around on with me.

Cool Bike for the money. It is heavy, but lighter replacement parts are available. Shipped well. Arrived without damage. It is a good idea to go over the bike slowly before riding. Grease the bearings, make sure everything is tight and adjusted. If you cannot do that, your local bike shop will gladly give it a "tune-up/set-up" for a reasonable fee. I also put an old pair of BMX pedals on that I had laying around. This bike is a conversation starter. Expect to be asked many questions when riding. I'm looking forward to riding on the beach this summer.

Its a fun bike to ride. You sure get allot of attention while riding it. I rode Fort Lauderdale's Critical Mass and was stopped so many times because riders wanted to take a look at it. Its a great bike for the price. With some newer brakes and a few other things it will be a better bike. Its a heavy bike

I took delivery late in August 2014 and found the box in poor condition, but the bike inside only had one scratch which was hard to find. It was boxed very well, which is why it weathered whatever happened to it in shipping via Fedex ground. It came out of the box then went together very easily using parts that appear to be well made and precisely engineered. The derailer and brakes appeared to be set up ok out of the box as well. I'm fortunate to have an electric air compressor to pump the tires as they were shipped with only 5lbs of pressure, but require 25 or 30lbs of pressure for riding - which took some time, even with the fancy compressor. Total assembly time about 20-minutes I am quite pleased with the bike and intend to use it for local transport (instead of jumping in a car all the time). It appears to be very well suited for this task. Seven gears is plenty for me - fine if its a bit heavier than similar configured but much much more expensive bikes. Will likely replace the seat with a more comfortable one for cruising. I'm 6'4" 195lbs, and my middle son is 5'4" 135lbs - fits us both very well and is easy enough to handle

As many have said, this is not a Surly Pugsley or equivalent. Those bikes have much better components, are lighter and also cost over $2K. I wanted a bike for my 5' tall, 11 year old son who was just about ready to graduate to a 26" MTB. I was going to build him a full suspension ride but I though at lower tire pressures, this would be a decent alternative and the price was right. It is heavy...very heavy! However it is trail worthy when riding low tire pressure. The breaks are mediocre at best. They will need to go and will het swapped out for a hydraulic setup. The gearing is not right. The 7-Speed grip shift is OK but it needs a much taller gear or two in the rear. Will be changing that as well. Handlebar, stem and seat are adequate but cheapo. Not unexpected and things I was planning to change over time. All-and-all......good purchase. Highly recommended.
