For the money this is an exceptional bike. Better built with better parts than bike I have owned for a lot more money. Assembly was a snap and only took a few minutes. Very smooth ride with good gears and brakes that needed only slight adjustment. Just plan on replacing the seat with a better one, that was the only thing I did not like. A bit small and hard for a street bike/ limited mountain bike. I would say it is a good street bike with good front shocks, but not really a true off road mountain bike.

  • A. This bike, and most Wal-Mart bikes are rated for up to 250 pounds. I expect if you rode this bike, you would need to replace all of the bearings with better quality parts. That means new bottom bracket, and new wheels, probably costing another $150. The tools to replace the bottom bracket would be about another $40, though for $200, you could have a bike shop get the parts and do the install for you. Also, after the first couple of rides, you want to have the wheels re-adjusted. Spokes stretch a little, and if you don't keep them snug, the rim can break. At 456, I'd recommend a steel or ChroMoly frame with wide tires (2.5 - 4.8"). This will carry your weight to the ground without worrying that the bike will break while you're moving. If you can get something with a 12mm axle, like the Maxle or Shimano Saint, that would be best for load bearing. That will make sure you don't bend an axle while pedaling up a hill (I found 10mm freewheel wasn't enough for me at 265LBS). You might be able to stick with 10mm, but it needs to be a freehub, not a freewheel. 180mm disc brakes will be best. 160mm might heat up too much, and rim brakes will need pads replaced pretty frequently. The best option would be to visit a local bike shop and get fitted. Expect to spend in the $1500 range for a solid bike to support you, and that's on the cheap end. Know that a third of that is the wholesale cost, a third is the retail cost, and a third is profit and customer service. If you build your own, you can save as much as 50%, but many frame manufacturers only sell at full MSRP to individuals, if at all. The service you receive in going to the LBS will be measure and fit, help in selecting the right bike, assembly and adjustment when it arrives (if not offered, tell them you want a tune up as part of the purchase, and also a tune-up after 100 miles). I know that Surly makes heavy-duty bikes. Recommended frames include the Krampus, Ogre, Karate Monkey, Frosti, or Pugsley. You can probably email them and they can point you to a local dealer who will get you set up. There are other brands that work, but most of them are more expensive. Niner makes solid bikes, and most any brand's "All Mountain" or "Down Hill" options will work, though you want to make sure the seat tube is high up enough that the seat post can get support. Lastly, the seat itself. You want something pretty big. Stock seats for any bike will be really uncomfortable. Most bike shops can fit you for a saddle. They measure how far apart your "sit bones" are by having you sit on some sort of glorified yardstick. To attach the seat, the biggest standard seat-post diameter is 31.6mm, and I recommend picking a frame, post, and clamp that is compatible with that sizing.
