Great Value in a 29er

Purchased the white colored two niner bike at my Wal-Mart store last week. Took it to an Local Bike Shop to get adjustments to disk brake, hubs geased, etc. for $40.00. Money well spent, as they adjusted alot of things on the bike from the factory setting, as well as adjusted the seat height to ensure a good fit. Took it out last weekend on a 20 mile ride and it performed nearly perfect. Several folks were amazed at the quality and especially for the price. If you want to get into trail riding and mountain biking but don't have $500.00 or more to spend on a 29er, then this one is for you.

I can't say enough about how much I like this bike! It's tough. It looks good in white, so I can't even imagine what it looks like in other colors. I use this bike for daily driving and it works excellent for that task. While this bike is excellent, I have only had a few issues with it. Item One: The kickstand. The original kickstand that came on the bike failed almost in an explosive manner. Customer Service worked very well with me considering that this is a relatively new model and they sent me the wrong kickstand the first time. With a few phone calls and getting a supervisor involved, they sent me the correct kickstand. Item Two: Rear Brakes. The pads are to small for such a massive wheel. I went to my local bike shop and got larger, heavier duty pads. The originals wore out within 20 miles. This was not a huge deal. My Bike Shop Guy said that painted wheels can sometimes wear out brakes faster until the paint breaks down enough to be almost smooth as the metal surface. Item Three: Front Deraileur. I am still trying to get this to adjust so I can put the bike into third (high) range. I do not need that range, but it would be nice to have it for long flat ranges. Considering the price point of this bike compared to others on the market, I can deal with these few small issues.

I purchased this bike back in June, on my first test ride (15 miles) the shifter for the front derailer broke. I returned that bike and rode out with another. I had to make a few adjustments on it for brakes and shifting as expected and I did change the seat, but other than that it has been a great bike. Having riden over 500 miles to date, on both trails and road, I have not had any significant problems. one of the front fork covers came loose, but after lubing the forks and reinstalling the cover, it has been a none issue. I am very happy with this bike and have and will continue to recommend it to others.

I’m going to try and give an informative review so this is going to be a long one. First off, this is a two hundred dollar bike, is that an accurate price….maybe. So I do ride my two nine almost everyday, to multiple locations, but I have yet to take it on some trails. To tell the truth I picked this one as a daily commuter. Not the best choice, but I was looking for a 21 speed, with suspension and the ability to ride over anything that gets in my way without wondering if the bike (tires and rims) will hold up. I live in the suburbs so that give you an idea of the terrain I commute over (sidewalks, pot holes, curbs, dirt paths and so on). I barrowed a Schwinn hybrid, and it felt good but the little rims and tires scared me, so a mountain bike give me the peace of mind. Yes the tires made the commute a little tougher in the beginning, but after some sweat and tears my stamina is getting better and the tires do not bother me anymore. Now, that borrowed hybrid feels like a kids bike and I am glad I went with a mountain bike (I really like the 29 inch tires). Now after reading several reviews on this bike (the good, bad and ugly) I still went with this one. I hate reading the online forums, there are never any informative reviews, just immature responses talking leading everyone in the wrong direction. Yeah, this Genesis won’t out last their $500, $800 and on up the price list, well of course it wont. But I’m also not training to be in the next Redbull competition either. What if I bought this and realized I don’t even like riding anymore? This bike does everything that I ask, I make it from point A to point B with no issues. I mean those guys in the forums are so irritating, would you ever tell someone to buy a corvette because it is a quality car and anything else is garbage? No, that’s not practical, ok off my soup box and back to the review. So why an average rating? Because it is still just a consumer bike, I’m not sure if it is normal to have to adjust, or tweak things in order to function properly, I feel like I am always adjusting the shifter cables, brakes and I think my rims are starting to get out of true. The kick stand broke off today, not sure if that was my fault or not, I’m sure it was not. But hey, it doesn’t stop me from riding. I removed almost all the stickers, I’m not 12 anymore and I like a cleaner looking bike (that doesn’t count towards the review, just a reminder you can take them off with no problem). The rear derailleur seems really loose, the chain slaps the frame, a lot, so I wrapped an old tube around the frame to limit the noise soften the blows. I would definitely recommend going over the entire bike and tighten or properly adjust things so it will perform well. And the front suspension gets a beating from me, I’m around 225 pounds and those poor springs get maxed out when I ride a little harder. I think I have something like 45 miles logged on this bike in a few weeks, I don’t remember how many I had on the first one. Yes, first one, someone in my neighborhood liked my bike too so they borrowed it, I’m still waiting for them to return it or maybe find it in a pawn shop. So to sum this whole thing up, I liked it enough to get another one when the first one was stolen. It gets the job done, I guess I could have picked up a higher quality bike used somewhere, but I like the 90 day warranty through Walmart and I know it hasn’t been abused.
