I initially purchased the Vivo to make one small repair to a curtain panel. Since I assumed I would rarely use the machine, price was the main selling point; The other selling point was appearance. The Vivo was the cheapest thing on the aisle that appeared less like a bedazzled toy and more like a real sewing machine. The Vivo appeared solid despite the hot-orange, swooshy theme (apparently all sewing machine manufacturers are under the impression that men are brut ogres and only Victorian women sew, almost all newer sewing machines are sporting a stereotypical feminine, sparkly, floral, day-glo or otherwise whimsical themes). Setting up the Vivo was easy enough. The instructions were clear and it took me less than 20 minutes to complete the whole threading process and sew my first stitch. It took me another 10 minutes to replace the broken needle and rethread the machine correctly, however, before I could sew a second stitch. I found the problem to be in the tensioner, I had threaded through the little hook shaped plastic bit instead of simply wrapping the thread under it. I still don't know what the hook looking thing is for. In any case, it took only a minute to get the tension figured out and I have been sewing ever since! After repairing the curtain panel that I originally purchased the Vivo for, I've gone on to sew three complete sets of lined drapes, two valances, two shower curtains, and dozens of odd repairs to clothing. The Vivo has not only held up to all this sewing, its done so without major error or complaint and has twice over paid for itself! The only problem I have had is an occasional uneven bit of stitches. It doesn't happen often, and when it does it is only for an inch or two then it will begin placing the stitches correctly again. When I first noticed this I thought I was pulling on the needle but, no. In any case, it's hardly noticeable and I usually just keep on sewing. Pros: It sews. It's inexpensive. It has enough basic stitches to do basic sewing without a bunch of fancy options and doo-dads to confuse, confound and tempt me! Cons: Only two speeds... both too fast for curves. Cheap foot pedal. Cheap LED light.

First, I'd like to mention that the box specifically states that this "is not a sewing machine" and it "is not intended for long term use", in case anyone is buying this online. I figured I would be fine with this regardless seeing as I didn't plan to make anything too big with it, but I had problems shortly after I started using it. I'm not sure if it broke down because I did use it too long (which was only about half an hour, not even), or it just wasn't a good machine to begin with, but it did not last long at all. From the start, it would constantly jam up. Half way through making a sleeve for my tablet, the mechanism that moves the bobbin completely stopped working. On top of that, it wasn't the easiest to use. There are only two speeds, the "low" is actually pretty fast and you can't slowly go into it, any pressure on the pedal and it goes right into full speed. At my local Walmart I saw a few other options for $15-30 more that had excellent reviews online, I would definitely pay the little extra for one of those.

Originally purchased to make (among other things) seat cushions for an outsized chair. Disappointed when I discovered there was no zipper foot among the accessories. I'm hoping to be able to purchase this accessory on line. Any suggestions? A zipper foot is essential in sewing piping . However, this is a good little machine for someone like me who has sewn all my life and can no longer lift or carry heavy items. This is light weight enough and has a carrying handle. I was a little surprised at how much noise it makes but I put a towel under it and that seems to cut down on the noise. For the money this is a good machine for a small apartment or someone like me who has sewn all my life and had sewing machines with all the bells and whistles and can no longer do the things I used to do. Also good for a novice sewer to learn on.

I bought this as my first sewing machine. I did not want to spend a ton of money if I did not know how I would like sewing. Well, I was returning it to the store within 48 hours. Out of the box it was great, fast setup, easy to thread, and simple to use. The problem was the tread kept on breaking. At first I thought I threaded it wrong, or the tension was too tight. But I would sew about 5" and the thread would break. There are only 2 speeds, slow and fast you cannot control it anymore. I would not even recommend this to a child. Spend the extra $20 and by the Brothers. I returned this one, got the Brothers XL6210 and I love it!!!

I was not too sure if this product would work at all as it is so reasonably priced. I works for me and there is no worry about threading or bobbins. It does what the specs say it will do and it is wonderful for mending.

  • A. I would say no. I am a beginner and I was getting aggravated with the thread continuing to break over and over. There is no way to control the speeds. I would spend the extra $20 and get a Brothers.

  • A. I would not recommend this machine to anyone, especially a beginner. If I had used this machine as a beginner, I would have gotten discouraged and given up on sewing. The Vivo has gotten mixed reviews with about 50% of users having difficulty. I would suggest that you read reviews on other models you are considering and purchase one with more consistant positive reviews.

  • A. The Vivo is not designed for use by children but it is certainly a great option for kids to learn to sew if they have the appropriate adult supervision. Basic stitch selections make it easy to pick a stitch and go. Two sewing speeds allow a controlled, slower speed then many machines provide by forcing the machine to go slower allowing the child to focus on technique and watching where little fingers are. A Blind Hem stitch and presser foot is included so one can master the fold required for this useful technique. A Buttonhole and Zipper Foot are not included but with practice these could be learned the ‘traditional’ way – how we did it before machines became ‘smart’.

  • A. I would be a bit concerned with only 2 speeds. Learning the sewing techniques requires snail pace for some things and I would be worried that there is no varying the speed other than what it is set to do. May be worth spending a bit more, or looking at a nice used machine so you don't have any set speeds - it all depends on how much pressure you put on the pedal.
