If U go to a shop, a bike like this goes for WAY over a grand. I've been mt biking for 25 years but I've never had disk brakes on my bikes, and it makes a world of difference on those long rocky downhills. I LOVE the 2.3 wide tires! Coupled with the full suspension, it floats over the toughest rocky sections and slashes down gravel flash-flood gullies. Only problem is now I have to stop all the time to wait for my friends to catch up on the downhill sections. I installed Slime tubes because of the cactus and "goat heads" in the mountains around Vegas; other than that I can't think of a single thing I would change on this very pretty bike. Can't wait for the lifts at Brian Head, UT after the ski season! Thanks Walmart, your bike manager picked all the right stuff for this Mongoose. notes: Buy a couple 2.3 tubes online so U'll have them on hand. They are hard to find locally. Also, about assembly: Piece of cake. The brakes are very easy to adjust, and everything is quick-release. My wheel reflectors are already broken off, lying somewhere in the NORBA track in Cottonwood valley, along with everyone else's wheel reflectors. I think that's kind of a tradition up there.

I purchased this bike on 2/18/08. This was my first bike since I was a kid and surprisingly I found I like riding and ride for an hour everyday both on the street and trail. The crank set bearings went out last summer and I had to buy sealed roller bearings. It's Achilles heal is the deraillieur bracket. I have broken three and all were when I was miles from home. One of the bracket breaks also damaged the deraillieur and I had to replace that as well. The shock that looks like it's a coil-over is nothing more than an adjustable spring. The control cables wear through the paint very quickly and there are several nuts/bolts that are rusting. You will find parts hard to get as this bike was made especially for the big box department stores. In short, this is an over priced bike if you do any riding at all, especially off road. I just purchased a Trek Fuel 5.5 and while I paid 3X more, the quality, adjustability and serviceability are like the difference between a cheap compact and a luxury car.

I have only owned the bike for a few months now but I will say this. It is a better deal than the XR DH which is a bit more expensive. The only real difference is the the manufacture of the fork. I rode both Dart 1 that comes on the XR DH and XCM that comes on the XR Comp and they are the same, they only have dampening adjustment. The rest of the components are of very good quality and are the same as the XR DH. Very good price for the quality you get. I will upgrade the forks.

Good beginner bike

I bought this bike about 5 months ago. I am new to mountain biking and wanted to see if I liked the sport or not. I am now average and can keep up with bikes that are more pricer. The front forks were squeking a lot so I tightened them up all the way. They don't squeek anymore. The rear shock made a squeeking noise to but after tightning them up they stoped too. I traded the SX-4 rear derailer to an SX-7. That made it improve a lot. Bought smaller tires because the ones that were on it were hard to find inner tubes for. Great Bike now.

A lot of bike for the money

This is a great value for an inexpensive mountain bike. I've been riding this bike hard 4 or 5 times a week for four months (over 200 hours) with very few complaints. It's a bit heavy (about 39lbs). I've had to lubricate the rear suspension and pedals to eliminate noises. I swapped the seat right away (which I would have done for almost any bike). To get a full-suspension (with damping on the rear suspension), 24-speed bike with front and rear disc brakes at this price is really remarkable. I ride with friends who have spent $2000 to $5000 for their bikes. Obviously, this bike isn't the same quality, but it is much closer than the price would indicate. The unusual spoke pattern and rims and the carbon wrapped handle bars really catch people's attention. The wide (2.35") tires offer far better traction.
