I ordered this bike for my daughter's 10th Birthday. It was not in stock so they ordered it site to store. Site to store does assemble upon arrival of the item at no charge, you just have to ask. They only have assemblers to build the bikes in the store 1 day a week. The bike arrived on Wednesday and was assembled and ready for pick up on Monday. I was so impressed at the quality of this bike and how great it looks! After looking at several bikes, I was also very impressed by the low price since this has an aluminum frame which makes it much easier to maneuver and pick up. Most bikes I looked at were steel frame, and prices ranged anywhere from $149.99-$299.99. At $139.99 assembled free of charge, this bike is an amazing value!

The issue I experienced and the reason for the rating is primarily due to Site-to-Store purchase. This was the last bike they had at this store, and the only one within a 50-mile radius at the time. So, we took it home. If they had one in the box I would be a very happy customer. Instead, I had to spend over two hours correcting the issues created by improper assembly. With 3 of 4 cables incorrectly routed / installed, that alone took quite a bit of time. One of the cables had to be replaced due to an unexposed crimped section, rendering the cable useless. Fair or not, my review is focused on these issues. HOWEVER: For $139.99 this bike is an excellent value, overall. This exact bicycle is priced up to $100 or more on several other shopping sites. The bike is a bit heavy compared to higher-end models, such as a Trek - but, that will run you over $220.00 MORE for a nearly-equivalent product*; the rider is not likely to notice and, after all, it will be outgrown in a few years... QUALITY: You do of course get what you pay for... and so, this is not the highest quality out there, but again it is a good value. The suspension, for example, offers little additional ride comfort - unless or until the rider is at the higher end of the size range (sometimes heavier is better). To a kid it does look cool though! COMFORT: The seat is terrible and I have to assume that to be an intentional design aspect, with consideration for an aftermarket of part suppliers. Sure, an adult or experienced rider, one that is truly " mountain-biking" will not sit often (and / or will likely wear bike shorts). For this target market the Ledge will most likely be ridden on paved bicycle paths & streets - not through woods and dunes. Personally I planned to replace the seat immediately, so my daughter doesn't have to be uncomfortable when we go on the long rides that I like to do - more selfish than selfless, but something to be aware of or consider. SIZING: Finally, I would like to add that the span between a 20" bicycle and this 24" can be very important to a new, young cyclist. Only you understand height (rate of growth) + capabilities. If your child is under 60" and not likely to grow a few inches over the summer, then you should probably go with a 20". Many of those models cost 1/2 as much and, even if used for only one season, it can mean a big boost in confidence for the rider. *a Diamond Back Tess (~$220) might be the mid-point, between the Ledge and a Trek MT220 ($379). At the high end a Trek Kids' Superfly 24 is an outstanding mountain bike ($469). We picked one up for a nephew and he loves it! But, he rides off-street, on and off a track... For a young girl of 10, the Trek Kids' FX is a very, very good bike - light and high quality. When shopping for this Ledge we also looked at the Polaris Ranger (Sports Authority) for $189. It is maybe a little better quality, but about the same weight. For my daughter it came down to color this time, and she picked the (pink / red) Ledge. Less money for an island-only, occasional-use bicycle, yeah! YES, I am Trek biased, as we own a total of six - but I do not work for them or anything. :-)

Good bike for those just getting into biking

I purchased the Ledge 2.1 for myself (Men's version) and this 24" girls version for my wife. My wife is very petite, she barely stands 5'1" tall, and this is about the smallest I could find without resorting to spending a lot for a custom bike, or getting her a girls BMX version. When she is riding her tip toes barely touch the ground, so often times she'll have to dismount in order to stand properly. The seat is a major pain (literally). We had to purchase a gel/memory foam cushion just to be able to sit for more than 5 minutes. But other than that, we've had these for two weeks now and we ride 5x a week at more than 5 miles each trip. They've held up very well. The bike is relatively lightweight, though not something she could lift and put onto a rack or in her trunk on her own. But while in use, it's easy to maneuver and responds really well to road conditions, trail conditions as well as sidewalk or paved pathways. As far as set up is concerned, I specifically chose bikes that were already put together at the store and ready to ride. I don't have the patience or time to spend on putting a bike together. From what I understand, if you have to put this together, it can be a major waste of your time. I highly recommend getting one off the rack from a store. If you're just getting into biking, or would just like an inexpensive bike to take to a trail, this thing works great. If you're serious about biking and want something to last the long haul while being extremely comfortable, you will definitely want to look elsewhere.

We were looking for a mountain bike for our 12 year old daughter and decided to get one that wasn't quite at the bottom of the pile, but also didn't want to spend over $200. I read the reviews here and elsewhere and decided that either this bike or a Schwinn would do the trick. My daughter liked this one better, so this is what we got. Our local store did not have one, but the next town over did, so we picked it up there. It wasn't until we got it home that I noticed several items. First, the front brake line had a bad casting on the end that feeds into the hand brake which caused it to be loose. The only way to tighten it was to crimp it tight, making it look ugly, just do she could ride it. I will have to go and buy a new one to fix it right. Then, I noticed that only 1 of the 4 brake pads were aligned to the wheels, so I fixed those. Surprisingly, both wheels were straight. Plus, the gearshift indicator on the left handlebar does not point to the gear it is in. Not even close. Next thing is the lettering and graphics. These are just stickers and every one of them is either crooked or crinkled. It would look better without them, in my opinion. The kicker is that her friend got the $99 Huffy also being sold by Walmart and it appears much nicer than this bike. I would return this bike if my daughter didn't like it so much. And I guess that's what counts the most.
