The following content was provided by the publisher.
From the creator of the critically acclaimed, award-winning Cork O'Connor mystery series comes a haunting, atmospheric, conspiracy thriller.
When President Clay Dixon's father-in-law -- a former vice president -- is injured in a farming accident, First Lady Kate Dixon returns to Minnesota to be at his side. Assigned to protect her, Secret Service agent Bo Thorsen soon falls under Kate's spell. He also suspects the accident is part of a trap set for Kate by David Moses, an escaped mental patient who once loved her. What Bo and Moses don't realize is that they're caught in a web of deadly intrigue spun by a seemingly insignificant bureaucratic department within the federal government. Racing to find answers before an assassin's bullet can kill Kate, Bo soon learns that when you lie down with the devil, there's hell to pay.

About the author

Biography of Krueger, William Kent

William Kent Krueger was born in Torrington, Wyoming on November 16, 1950. He attended Stanford University for one year before losing his academic scholarship for participation in a takeover of the president's office in protest of what he saw as the University's complicity in weapons production during the Vietnam War. He wrote short stories and sketches for many years. His first novel, Iron Lake, won the Anthony Award for Best First Novel, the Barry Award for Best First Novel, the Minnesota Book Award, and the Loft-McKnight Fiction Award. He writes the Cork O'Connor series. In 2005 and 2006, he won back-to-back Anthony Awards for best novel.

Reviews

Review by Library Journal (2003-02-15)

In his latest thriller, Krueger (Purgatory Ridge) offers an intriguing premise, but the execution is pedestrian. President Clay Dixon is running for reelection and is currently behind in the polls. His wife, Kate, is contemplating leaving him, which would essentially end any hopes of a second term. When Kate's father is injured in what appears to be an accident, she rushes to his bedside. This accident, however, is just the first step in an elaborate scheme to kill her and her father.

The mastermind is an escaped mental patient named David Moses, who was in love with Kate when they were younger. Assigned to protect Kate, Secret Service agent Bo Thorson is on to Moses and in his race to stop him stumbles onto an even bigger conspiracy that could cost him his career-and his life. While this novel is compelling enough to finish, all of the situations and plot twists are cliches; it doesn't even offer an insightful look into the Secret Service. Chalk this up as average; for larger fiction collections.
