  • A. I use it with an older TV. You'll need the same 3 prong cord (yellow, white, red) that you used with your older VCR or DVD player. It does not come it, though. I think you can buy one at Wal-Mart or RadioShack.

I do not normally submit reviews, but the only one I found on this product was completely negative and yet I had a good experience ....... I purchased this on a Walmart Black Friday wim.... $29.99 . Unlike the other reviewer I found the RCA DSB872WR to be easy to set up and was downloading a Netflix movie within minutes! This model does NOT come with an HDMI cable, but I had a spare thanks to the cheap prices at monoprice.com (a good place to get all kinds of cables). I had no problems with the setup screen timing out ... or any frustration at all! After first booting I did have to reboot it, but maybe it was just searching and I grew impatient? Hit the setup button on the remote and everything worked smoothly from then on. The remote is plastic feeling, but worked fine. I may buy another for my Mom-in-law.

Bought this discounted for $38 on Friday. Went home and had it connected to my TV using the HDMI connector within 5 mins. Another 3 minutes to walk through the wifi connection and I was streaming my Netflix shows on my older 50" tv at 1080p. Performance was a tad slower in connecting to Netflix than my iPad but not anything to be upset about. The slower performance in switching movies or scrolling through a movie is completely acceptable once you understand it takes a second to acknowledge the button command. If you've watched streaming movies from an iPhone, iPad, or xBox360 there's really no difference in lag. Now.. I have a Blueray Player with the Netflix app and this RCA media streamer is much faster in performance. I used it all weekend streaming Breaking Bad shows and not once did it hangup, overheat, or underperform. I will say the remote feels cheap..."HOWEVER" the price is cheap! I don't know if I got a good remote and/or good batteries but it works just fine when I press the buttons normally. The remote is infrared so you do have to point it at the media streamer. The remote worked at 6 feet in the bedroom and at 30+ feet when I moved the box to my living room. #Note also that the wifi is now two rooms away about 60 feet in distance# I also tested YouTube videos and it worked as advertised. It's working so well that I am thinking of going back and getting one for the living room and my media room! I have a N600 linksys wireless router and only a 6MB DSL connection. We were running Netflix in two rooms #one on iPad and the other the RCA streaming device# with no buffering or lagging. This is a great little box at a great price!

I've been using my Wii for Hulu & Netflix for years and when I saw this, I thought it would be fantastic because it also allows you to access Vudu, YouTube, and Pandora and I use these programs a LOT. Its definitely worth it for me! Its really easy to use and I haven't experienced any issues with the remote.

I purchased one of these players on a whim last summer for my father. I was in Wal-Mart, and they had one, which looked new in a sealed box, but placed inside of one of those plastic containers reserved for returned items that are possibly missing parts. It also had $29 on the label, which seemed like a mistake. So I bought it. I figured if it didn't work... heck, it's Wal-Mart, and I'd just go get my money back -- you should try the same before dropping money on a Roku that only does 720p and actually costs more. PROS: Inexpensive, yet brilliant Netflix playback. Best value for the money player. New and old style connections for different TV's. Full 1080p and resolutions are easily switched in menus. Great if you want to save bandwidth. Still small. Looks like something Darth Vader would own. CONS: Remote is cheezy, but works fine. Runs a bit warm. Review: I am pleased to respond that the RCA player worked (and still works) wonderfully! If there were ever problems with firmware or updating, that's apparently all in the past. The first place I tried it was downstairs on dad's old-style TV, which has no HDMI. It took a few minutes to update to the new firmware, but reception downstairs was great, and it went off without a hitch. I think any issues like that were ironed-out long ago. That older TV is downstairs, for grandkids to use when over. This RCA box not only works with that, dad can dial it up to 1080p for the new LG LED-TV and plug in via HDMI for the TV he has upstairs, or keep it at 720p on the smaller 32" TV in his computer room, which is where it mostly stays. The added connectivity to older players is something the new Roku's are now going without. The RCA is more versatile for the money. Hands down. Speaking of Roku, you have to give them a credit card number to get their units to work. Not so with the RCA. I felt that is worth mentioning. Yes, the remote on the RCA is a bit cheezy, but it's not exactly something you are going to use for much more than turning the thing on and basic input/navigation. So what? Do you want a keyboard, trash-talking reviewers?? If you are looking for a do-all box that will replace your cable TV, then this RCA unit may not be it. If you just want to stream Netflix reliably (and we didn't notice buffering problems at all) then this unit is for you! This unit does get a little warm to the touch, so keep that in mind if that concerns you, or you plan to put it into a tight spot. For the money this costs, it's WELL worth the value. 9 months and still going strong! Lastly, my wife works for an unrelated company which hired a company to write dozens of negative reviews against competing products for sale on the web. A lot of the negative reviews against this unit look repetitive in that way... just food for thought.

I used to have Samsung Blu-Ray streaming device which has horrible performance. Gets heat and hangs out very frequently. Typing takes 5 to 10 seconds for each letter!! I explored many devices and at last bought this device because of the low price. Pros: Its very good for this price. Tiny device. Streams very well. Remote works very good. Navigation is easy. I used for more than 8 hours continuously, still the device works fine and bit warm (not hot like other devices) . Cons: Remote doesn't have the keyboard. At least it should have numbers keyboard.

You Can't beat it for the price I paid. $34.00 for box and a vizio 6ft HDMI cable with free shipping= a win-win for me. So what if it was a refurbished unit, all that means to me most of the time is that if there was a problem with it, someone gave the unit a closer inspection and fixed the problem, which doesn't happen many times on a assembly line. I bought 3 of them and actually , not one of the rca streaming media devices looked like a factory refurb. I often buy refurb'd items and you can tell a good portion of the time that a item has been previously used, but these units arrived as they were new in box condition. I would def recommend this item for a budget minded shopper. I am not a big RCA fan, however, I took a chance with this item as it fit in the allocated holiday budget and am very satisfied with My purchase. My 70 year old father understood how to operate and navigate the simple user interface and the icons are large and easy to see on any TV!

First of all the device/box doesn't respond to the remote like it should...not at all!...AND the speed at which this device/box streams is ridiculous!...That is if you can get it to respond to the remote!...You will find yourself inches from the box with remote in hand pushing the same button over and over and over in vain and then -IF- it starts to stream be prepared for some serious "buffering"...I'm surprised that Wallmart is still selling these because they are REALLY BAD!...Do yourself a favor and spend a few bucks more on the "Roku HD" if your television displays 720p and the "Roku XD or XS" if your television is capable of displaying 1080p you'll be glad you did! - They are VERY user friendly and truly hassle free!

I purchased one of these to go on my TV in my bedroom to hold me over until I bought a new Bluray player. It works so well I bought a second to go in my living room to save on the use of the Bluray player in there. The remote is not very good, you have to have it pointed directly at the front of the box for it to work but the player plays very well.
