It does not say. I'm assuming it's the upgrade but then why would Walmart not discount it below Microsofts stated price?

  • A. This is a upgrade. The full version is 139.99 as of 11/08/2012. Upgrade means just that. You need a previous windows installed to get it to work. A full version (139.99) one does not need anything on the hard drive to install.

  • A. The rule is 60/40 on profit. Packaging, and hard line format of the DVD all plays here when it comes to price. It's cheaper online without all these above for that reason. Same software, no glitz. As to Upgrade? No. The engineering involved here cannot be upgraded. It takes all of your files in windows folders (Docs/Photos/Desktop, etc.) and places it into Windows.old folder. Be prepared to lose what is in Program Files and/or the rest of your hard drive. I rec'd backing up everything you deem important either on flash drives or cloud based hard drives. Software needs to be reinstalled. Only back up config and data files, as the new OS may not like the old software you put back in.Most companies have upgrades their software to Win 8 compatibility.

  • A. Yeah, it is the upgrade version. You must have Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista, or Windows 7 to use this copy. I'am guessing that the reason this copy is more expensive then microsoft is because the 39 dollar version from microsoft is a download version not a physical product. On the microsoft site it says you can get a physical copy shipped to you for 69 dollars.

What I found is that Windows 8 went mainstream for touchscreen applications. The whole Operating System can be navigated through the Metro (Start) screen via installed/ installable / removeable apps. Seems that even tho there is just one Operating system, there are two software options. One through the main Start screen, one through desktop interface. Both are not the same. Desk/Laps are going to find it somewhat clunky to use. Even though the start button is gone, the desktop remains with all the features present from Windows 95 and up. It resembles 7, with better memory management, more stable, and can handle many applications at once. I will say that it is not a fan of flash applications, slowing to maximize the resources that Flash demands, even if it is embedded into the IE browser. All in all Microsoft done well to this OS, however the price point is not favorable. Android (Chromebook) OS is free. Certain 'flavors' of Linux is free. Microsoft is still using the fact that they are running top in their class program because this is what everyone is used to, and showing it via their 70.00 box.

in general I have no issues with this version of windows I do however have a few issues with finding some of the classic apps I use regularly and found them only by stumbling upon them accidently such as the shut down link, also with IE having trouble finding folders I've added to favorites and have to use the desktop IE link to find them all. Next is email, I receive pictures in my email from friends and family but am unable to save them thru the new email app and have not found any information on how to do this. Overall after pecking around I find most of what I need or a work around for whatever issues I may have. So in conclusion, I find Windows 8 Pro to be the best version yet, even with the issues I've had when first installed and the learning curve I find the interface much easier to work with and the speed at which my pc starts with now is a blessing. I use the weather app a lot and enjoy the much more detailed info presented

I'd say it's the next iteration of Microsoft's Windows operating system. It's pretty stable, but had a tough time installing it on the third of three computers due to hardware incompatibilities. The two computers I installed it on seemed to install smoothly and the new apps are good.

I own a computer running windows vista home premium on a single core computer with 2gb ram. I upgraded it to windows 8 pro. The installation took less than an hour. Windows 8 runs so much better. start and shut down times are so much improved. windows 8 is very responsive. I wish that the start menu was better organized and they had an option to used the regular start menu. The preinstalled games that normally be in windows are gone They have to be download through the app store. Media center is gone but it can be downloaded free for a limited time.

I've read a lot of negative reviews about the Windows 8 upgrade but decided to give it a go. I might add that I also own the Apple IPad and IPhone. The Windows upgrade took an hour or so to complete and I was upgrading from Windows 7 on an Acer Laptop. Well, at first glance I am pleasantly surprised at easy it is to navigate. I say that based on a few negative reviews on how to navigate through the new look. There is a "box" where I can get to my old desktop look and programs. The "picture" section is too cool as it not only displays the folders but some of the pictures in the folders. And there is shuffle feature that allows for a random collage of photos! There are also " boxes" for easy access to word, excel, etc. The mail function allows the user to set up multiple email accounts. The negatives of Windows 8 is it makes you set up a Microsoft account...but really no big deal. I give this product "big thumbs up!"

Installing Windows 8 on two computers Wow

I upgraded two computers with windows 8 upgrade with many hours to get it done. I upgraded from XP Professional to the new upgrade. My first computer I ended up formatting the hard drive to install a fresh copy of XP. Why? My internet explorer was not working on it and I had a few more errors for some time. YOU MUST have internet exploring working on present system to install this program on your computer. After getting that complete I ran into problems. The install kept crashing, starting to install and then stopping. After a lot of time and frustration and thinking, I figured it out. YOU MUST run defragmenter from Control Panel to defragment your hard drive first. That was the issue and then I was able to install it on this computer. My other computer was running fine and I tried to install it. Crashed once and I defragged my C drive hard drive from Control Panel and THAT was the ticket. After defragmentation was done, the program installed wonderfully. My review of Windows 8 ??? It is so different, its going to take time to learn, but the interface is pretty cool and exciting. Sort of like going to the bank teller machine for a withdrawl, hit the tab and that is how you get around. So far I like it and am running a GAME that requires a better OS system like windows 8, Black Ops II. So for the price and the coolness of this new program I give it a thumbs up. JUST RUN DEFRAGMENTER first before either type of install.

W-8 not worth it

After 5 weeks "trying to use/learn" my new computer's W-8, I gave up and paid $250 to have it "downgraded" to Windows 7 ... love W-7, hate W-8. #$250 incl. $120 for new W-7# Have used PC's for 30 yrs, via ALL MS Windows products. It never took longer than a week to learn the software. What I did learn on W-8 mostly just slowed me down as I navigated around. Other than ease of use for those who have apps on their phones, pads, etc., I see no real value here. For "personal" use, get W-7 if you can, and wait for a better MS Windows product.
