I have roughly twenty years' experience operating kerosene heaters such as this one. As a child, we supplemented the furnace in our log cabin with the good old Corona 22-DK, which is still sought-after despite its lack of a protective cage over the top. Other than burning out the ignitor, and the difficulty finding replacement wicks locally, I still use this beast of a heater. Several years ago, we replaced the Corona with the Dyna-Glo RMC-95-C, which is still a great heater and easy to find replacement wicks are at Walmart and Home Depot. Unfortunately, the burner is starting to wear out after several years of constant, round-the-clock operation over ten CT winters, and I had to give our spare RMC-95-C back to my mother to use in the house. I had been using this unit in an unheated, uninsulated, drafty garage for 5-8 hours a day, and by using tarps I had partitioned off a section 12' x 20' and achieved an indoor temperature of 64 degrees when it was in the mid-teens outside. Today, I just purchased the WK-95C6C, which shares almost every part with the older WK-95-C that we have used reliably for many many years. I've only just filled the tank, but I am expecting similar rock-solid operation. Every other kerosene heater we have owned has had the almond color; seeing this unit in black is really something. Assembly is ridiculously simple. The wick is pre-loaded into the burner, the burner is attached to the tank, and the tank is attached to the round base plate. All the purchaser needs to do is unbox the unit, attach the protective cage, handle, and top cover, and you're ready to go. The only tool you need is a good-quality #2 Philips screwdriver. A cheap siphon pump is included, which is fairly easy to operate if you take your time. DO NOT START THE PROCESS AND THEN LEAVE WHILE IT IS FILLING. Sometimes, after the siphon is started, an air bubble will go through the hose into the tank, and after that point the kerosene is flowing faster. Remember to loosen the cap at the top of the pump to release siphon power just before you hit the full line, you might need to raise the end that's in the fuel can to break suction - although that is rare. All-in-all, be careful, take your time, and be prepared before you fill. Have some paper towels handy, just in case, and I've also found keeping the pump in an old plastic jug will contain any drips that may still be in the pump (and give it a space-saving "stand". Another point to make is you should ONLY use clear (undyed) kerosene. Dyed kerosene is taxed for road use, and the dye has a bad habit of ruining wicks and causing soot. Also, I would recommend if you purchase kerosene at gas stations, purchase a bottle of kerosene treatment - kerosene absorbs moisture, including humidity in the air, so it is quite possible to get kerosene with water in it, which will also burn poorly and cause carbon buildup on the wick. If this is your first time with a kerosene heater, use a brand-new, clean blue jug (in some states, that is the law), and a clean jug means clean kerosene goes into the clean tank in your heater. This keeps your heater running at its best, and burning the longest. You can also purchase kerosene in plastic jugs at Walmart and Home Depot, but I've found that to be less convenient. Keep the cap on your jug snugly sealed, and kerosene has a nearly infinite shelf life. It's a good fuel for bomb shelters, too. Familiarize yourself with the manual lighting instructions, because I've found that the ignitors burn out quite easily, and if you have luck like me, it will fail on a night you need it most! If you have moderate mechanical skills, wick and ignitor replacement is reasonably easy. The shortcut is to simply remove the large screw at either side of the bottom of the large cylinder, and lift straight up on the safety cage. That takes all the sheet metal parts off, the chimney will rest inside the cylinder, and the burner is right there, ready for service. I replace the wick once a year, sometimes twice, but again that is with 24/7 use at low setting, (the highest setting burns fuel faster, burns hotter, and burns cleaner) over 4-5 months. The amount of use we put our heater through is the equivalent of a year and a half of burning it for 8 hours a day, every day. We automatically put a new wick in at the start of every season as a preventative measure, so with good quality kerosene and proper care, the average user in a temperate climate should get 2-3 years of winter-only use to a wick. Contaminated fuel ruins a wick. All kerosene heaters give off some soot when first lit, and give off fumes when shut down. This should be expected, and is normal behavior. Excessive soot is something that usually requires minor attention. Also, if you are in a well-sealed house, you MUST crack a window slightly and use in a well-ventilated area, and I would advise if you do not have children, keep a small pot of water on the top and keep it fairly full to provide humidity to the air.
