Movie Description

The following content was provided by the publisher.

Inspired by the true story of the leader of the Mormon Church, this film features Dean Jagger in the title role. The members of the Church of Latter Day Saints are subjected to religious persecution by the people of Nauvoo, Illinois, where they've settled; so under the leadership of Brigham Young, the Mormons head west, facing tremendous adversity along the way. However, a gravely ill Young has a prophetic dream in which he sees what he believes is his people's promised land, where they will be allowed to live and worship as they see fit. Soon they discover the land Young saw in his dream -- Salt Lake City, Utah. Young and his followers settle there, but their hardship does not end soon. The first winter in Utah is cruel, and while the spring brings the promises of a bountiful planting season, soon a plague of locusts appears, threatening to devour the crops the settlers have just planted. A huge flock of seagulls arrives to save the day by consuming the insects. Tyrone Power and Linda Darnell play a pair of settlers who fall in love in the course of the journey. Brigham Young downplays the more controversial aspects of the Mormon church (particularly polygamy) in favor of portraying Young as a trail-blazing man of the land; in some markets, the film was shown as Brigham Young, Frontiersman. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi.

Commentary by James D'Arc, Brigham Young University, Script excerpts, Movietone newsreel: Salt Lake City Premiere, Letter from Vincent Price, Production/publicity galleries.

Presented in Black & White, Subtitles: English (Closed Captioned).

Customer Product Reviews

Rated 3.3 out of 5★by 3reviewers.
Rated 2 out of 5★by Brigham Young Needs to be restored in color. Interesting how theydid special effects without all of the technology of today. Even without the young couple- it seemed to follow the gist of the Mormon struggle. (And by today's standards- movie moguls would have made the "evils" probably more realistic. 09/30/2008
Rated 3 out of 5★by LDS Collector DVD I rented this film from the Library for free before deciding to buy. Skeptical on the movie value. This movie belongs in any LDS film collection. Non-LDS may find it enjoyable as well as an old time film and educational on Brigham Young and the Mormon pioneers.I wish it was more accurate on history (Nice to have the BYU Commentator audio tract avail! To sort out fact fiction and FAQ’s) but it still is insightful and educational, and even enjoyable. Surprised on the 2 hr length, great stories like the Nauvoo- Illinois, Cricket crops miracle,SLC development, etc. For $5 why not take a jump in on Brigham Young, I am. 06/08/2009
Rated 5 out of 5★by It just so happens I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. This movie is as close to how thing were in the beginning of our Church. I would recommend this movie to anyone who is interested in finding out how things were in the beginning. The actors were well chosen. I would rate this as a 5 star movie 04/21/2012
