At the co-ed Clark County Detention Center, the jail mom rules the women's block. Follow Tess, the jail mom who has been locked up at CCDC 22 times, as she tries to use her own life as a cautionary tale to coax younger inmates out of the game before they fall in too deep.

At Las Vegas's main jail, Clark County Detention Center, inmates try as hard as possible to retain a sense of normalcy. And for many, that means keeping up their gang lifestyle. We'll go inside one of CCDC's most difficult dorms - an open housing unit filled with high-security inmates, repeat offenders, felons and gang members where life on the inside can be just as tough as life on the outside.

Las Vegas can be a town of excess - Sin City. Many of the 80,000 people who come through the Clark County Detention Center each year have taken those extremes too far. But while arrest is the end of the road on one hand, it's also the beginning of the story. It's the start of hard time for some, and the place of hard choices for others.

For some, survival in the jail comes down to reputation and intimidation. Inmates who live with this daily reality sometimes bend and sometimes break. That's where the Gang Special Investigations Unit steps in the administration's detectives. They monitor gangs and disrupt their programs. But sometimes threats slip through the cracks, and it's a constant struggle to prevent underlying tensions from boiling over into an all-out riot.

Meet inmates struggling with mental illness like Lance Marshall, a schizophrenic who suffers delusions and fancies illegal weapons; Roy Washington, a former gang member and cutter, who's attempted suicide multiple times; and drug addicts like partners-in-heroin-use Nina Dickun and her boyfriend, Levi Kivi.

With new inmates constantly pouring in, one of the hardest jobs for officers is organizing, classifying, and keeping the inmates safe. Once inside, inmates divide themselves by things like race and gang affiliation, and a tense community of groups and cliques can be created. In this dangerous world, one of the most difficult ways to do time is to not fit in. In this episode, we spend time with three inmates who for one reason or another simply don't fit in.

Las Vegas can be full of vices - both legal and illegal. Break the law and you're hauled into the Clark County Detention Center. But getting booked here punishes more than arrestees - family and friends on the outside often share the heartache of the jail sentence. Loved ones must navigate an intimidating world where details of what's happening behind bars are hard to find and visitation lasts only 30 minutes a day.

Just like Sin City, the Clark County Detention Center never sleeps. It's a round the clock operation, where challenges come daily. From feeding the inmates to combating riots, keeping the peace comes down to the officers - but giving in to the control of the system is up to the inmates. In an environment where people's freedom has been taken from them, even the smallest rule must be followed or chaos can ensue.

For the officers that handle the inmates on a daily basis at Last Vegas's Clark County Detention Center it can be hard to tell who is lying and who is telling the truth. Rosemary Vandecar has been accused of first-degree murder but claims she is innocent. Dubbed "Jail Mom", she extends her legal advice to other female inmates, making her influential in her unit. But when officers find something suspicious in her cell, she is stripped of her transportation job within the jail.
