Detective Isaac Bell returns in the remarkable new adventure in the #1 New York Times-bestselling series.
It is 1902, and a bright, inexperienced young man named Isaac Bell, only two years out of his apprenticeship at the Van Dorn Detective Agency, has an urgent message for his boss. Hired to hunt for radical unionist saboteurs in the coal mines, he is witness to a terrible accident that makes him think that something else is going on, that provocateurs are at work and bigger stakes are in play.
Little does he know just how big they are. Given exactly one week to prove his case, Bell quickly finds himself pitted against two of the most ruthless opponents he has ever known, men of staggering ambition and cold-bloodedness . . . who are not about to let some wet-behind-the-ears detective stand in their way.

About the author

Biography of Cussler, Clive

Clive Cussler was born in Aurora, Illinois on July 15, 1931. He attended Pasadena City College for two years before enlisting in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. After his discharge from the military, he worked first as a copywriter and later as a creative director for two of the nation's most successful advertising agencies. At that time, he wrote and produced radio and television commercials that won numerous international awards, including one at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival.

He began writing in 1965 and published his first novel featuring Dirk Pitt in 1973. His first non-fiction work, The Sea Hunters, was published in 1996. He has written over 50 books including the Dirk Pitt series, the NUMA Files series, Oregon Files series, and the Isaac Bell series. He is the Chairman of NUMA (National Underwater and Marine Agency), a non-profit group which he himself began. He and his crew of marine experts and NUMA volunteers have discovered over 60 historically significant underwater wreck sites.

Review by Library Journal (2013-06-15)

In 1902, Van Dorn detective Isaac Bell is hired to investigate a series of coal-mining accidents that have led to violent conflict between labor and management. The miners are working in dangerous, primitive conditions, and a fledgling union is trying to improve their circumstances while railroad tycoons and mine owners resist any efforts to reduce hazards and increase the miners' pay. Bell discovers that management is willing to do just about anything-including murder-to preserve their profits.

Isaac Bell doesn't have the spectacular globe-trotting adventures of other Cussler (Poseidon's Arrow) protagonists such as Dirk Pitt or the Fargos, but the series more than makes up for it with careful plotting, good writing, and believable characters. Longtime narrator of Cussler audiobooks Scott Brick is flawless in his delivery and maintains the suspense from the spectacular mine accident that begins the book to the nail-biting finish that finds Bell fighting for his life.

Verdict: For all public libraries.
