When I first received this from Wal-Mart.com at my door, I was impressed with just the shear size of the box. My husband was impressed with how much it weighed, and had a huge foot print!. lol Well, I knew the machine would sew, but that's not my main reason for buying it. I bought it to embroider. So that's the first thing I checked to see how well it would work. Boy, was all my fears realized. I went through 10 (TEN) needles in just two days! And I didn't even get a whole project completed. Every time it was done with a color of thread, it would move back to the center position. When it did, the thread would not be given enough slack to do that. It's like it had the brakes on, and snap! would go another needle! As if that wasn't enough, it did not like going around a scalloped curved edge. The thread would break all through out that whole agonizing feat, and get nests under the the hoop! It was loud and clunky on the embroidery attachment. I was looking forward to making large designs, but instead I was on the phone with Singer for about two hours going through all the steps that led me to call them in the first place. And yes, I made sure that I had the right bobbins, stabilizer, needles and thread. But in the end... even Singer told me to take it back and exchange it. Well, I couldn't do that because I must have bought the last one Wal-Mart had in stock. So, I ended up with a refund and no machine. Do yourself a favor and buy a Brother! I have over a million stitches on my SE-400, and it's still going. I did end up ordering the Brother PE 770. It's an embroidery only machine, and only does up to 5x7 designs...but for the money, it's a better buy and less of a headache!

This machine is fabulous for both sewing and embroidery. The super simple threading, makes it great for those of us that have trouble seeing the small needle hole now. The automatic needle threading and simple top drop-in bobbin are great. The embroidery tool offers a nice large embroidery space, plus a multi-hooping feature that allows professional quality work on a home machine. Singe keeps the cost down by letting you use your own computer rather than having it built in, which makes them less expensive to service. I love the great customer service available through their toll-free number. I have had several Singer machines in the years I have been sewing, and this is my favorite!

    • A. Yes. I just did one today that had 37 letters and it printed in the proper order. You have to allow for width and use the return key to make them fit on the fabric. If they are to large then they won't fit on the 6 x 10 hoop. Futura has feature that will let you did multiple 6 x 10 (2 x 2) which make an embroidery area of 12 x 20 if you take your time and read the instructions carefully. Haven't tried it yet, but the book shows you what to do. It is a little weak on instructions but you can make it work.

    • A. No one letter at a time. I hope this helps. I know that you can do phrases with this and then when you go to embroider them they do them all but only one to a time. I hope this answers the question for you.

    • A. Unsure exactly what you mean but it has the one needle to embroider so one at at time yes. It has the capability to enter a name, choose the font, and then it embroiders the full name beginning with the first letter then moving on to the end of the name.

    • A. Depending on the size of the letters. You can do Whole Names, Initials, of various sizes and fonts all at one time. No need to do one letter at a time.

    • A. Yes you can do the quilting on this machine and I would look into getting the proper foot for this. I have one and can not think of what it is called as it is late at night for me to think. I hope this helps you.

    • A. The answer is Yes. You can quilt with just about any sewing machine. This machine does not come with the quilting foot, the walking foot, 1/4 inch foot. But what it has makes this the best machine for quilting is the opening from the tower to the needle is much wider opening allowing plenty of room to sew the larger quilts. With the more powerful motor you will have no problems sewing multiple layers. If you are looking for a machine that sews quilting designs on the quilts you may have to look into the long arm quilting machines to use with long quilting tables.

    • A. Yes, though it is not specifically a quilting machine, it can be used to quilt. I used it to make a quilt for my daughter.
