Winner on Accuracy and Price

Did a quick comparison with my old meter sampling large single blood drops for a few days. The average difference was about 3.5 on each set and the averages for the test only differed by about 2.6. My decade or so of experience tells me readings even on a single meter vary by those amounts in tests on separate blood drops (checking meter consistency). Conclusion is same accuracy for about one third the cost, a winner. The worst problem I have found is that the strip is slightly harder to insert into the channel on the meter. I was really excited when I went to Walmart one day and noticed their new monitor had strips that were half the price of of my Ultima. It gets difficult to afford my supplies sometimes and this was wonderful news to me. While I have had no issues with using the Prime test strips (the bottle is completely open making them easier to access) I have noticed some issues with accuracy. My Ultima was always pretty much dead on with me. If I tested several times in a row it would only be a couple points different in either direction. That's ok in my book for the price. However, with the Prime, I can test five times in a row and end up with a 30 point difference across the tests. When my numbers are ideal it drops down to a 10 point difference. It seems to be most accurate from 90-150 but above or below those numbers causes it to vary more. When you're short on cash it may be just enough to know in general where your numbers are at. As always you get what you pay for, it's up to you to decide what you can afford.

These were by far the best deal on test strips. This is my first foray into glucose testing, so no comparisons, but they seem to work fine, and require very little blood to work. That said, accuracy is vital to saying if this is a good deal or not, and I have no idea if they're accurate, since you can't buy the testing solution online or in the stores for this meter. You HAVE to go to the Relion website, then give them ALL your personal info, before they will ship it to you free. (Just why do they need my phone and email info, to ship me a product by mail? Can they send it to me via email, or phone?) I really resent having this solution held hostage until I divulge my personal info to them, for what unknown purpose. Medical info should be kept private, and I shouldn't have to tell anyone my medical history, or private contact info to make sure a product I PURCHASED works properly. They should make the solution available anywhere the product is sold, rather than holding it hostage. Bad form Relion. Bad form.

My Dad is diabetic and we have had other test kits which were more expensive. Bought this kit and have never had a problem with it and the test strips are much more affordable.

Literally the worst tester/strips I've ever used

My doctor recommended this tester because it's super cheap and he can download the numbers. I was excited about the price so I bought it and have been using it for about a month and a half. It is the WORST tester I've ever used. For the first week it worked okay, but it would get errors more often than other ones, and sometimes I'd have to use 2 test strips before it would work. Then the more I used it the worse it got. Now basically every time I test my blood I have to use at least 2 test strips, and several times I've tested 7 times and it still won't work. It either won't register that I've put my blood in the strip (and there is definitely enough blood in there) or it says says E13E! or something like that. Not sure if the problem is the tester or the strips. It's been extremely difficult to use and I'm definitely switching asap. I'd rather pay more money for something more reliable. I definitely can't "reliOn" this tester.

Lot # 09133A I pay for 50 but only half of them I am able to use?

  • A. I switched to Relion from OneTouch to save money on test strips, and I couldn't be happier. I initially had a VERY few "E13" errors, but quickly noted how to eliminate them. Very little blood is needed to fill the test reservoir at the end of the strip, but the trick is how you touch the strip to your blood sample. I hold the meter upside down, so that my finger/blood sample is ABOVE the end of the strip; gently place the hard plastic side of the strip against my skin at an angle (like a spatula), and then slide the end of the strip upward until it touches the bottom of the blood droplet. That way, you're using both gravity and a "scooping" action, e.g., to make sure the blood quickly and properly wicks into the test reservoir at the end of the strip. Using this technique, I've had zero "E13" errors.

  • A. YOU MUST USE A CERTAIN VOLUME OF BLOOD FOR THIS DEVICE - TRY USING A SLIGHTLY BIGGER DROP OF BLOOD - I TRY TO GET A DROP ABOUT A MM IN DIAMETER - THEN YOU TOUCH THE STRIP TO THE EDGE OF THE DROP ON YOUR FINGER - DO NOT SMEAR THE BLOOD OR THE METER WILL BE UNHAPPY.

  • A. You need a thick drop of blood and let the strip suck up the amount of blood it needs.

  • A. Ensure that when you poke your finger to get a sample of blood that there is enough blood to flow the whole length of the Prime test strip sampler. I have used these Prime test strips for months with no problems at all.

  • A. There are instructions online of how to use the strips. Until I read that I didn't understand why I'm getting an E13 on MOST of my tries. Now I understand that if TOO much or not enough blood is entered into the test area you'll get the error message. How to do it correctly (and it's hard) is to touch the blood with the end of the test strip only. That is designed to draw the blood into the test area. If you just flood the area by sticking it into a big drop of blood it's a wasted effort. Try only extracting a small amount of blood from your finger. When the blood does get absorbed into the test area PULL AWAY FAST when it reaches the end. If you let it stay there you'll always get too much blood absorbed. These are tricky to use without error messages but I'm sure once we learn properly the price is EXCELLENT.

  • A. First of all you need to follow the directions to make sure that you have a big enough blood drop. Use the correct lancet with the correct tip on the lancing device. If it is the ReliOn Lancet, the blue tip is for finger tips and the clear is for your forearm. Press the lancet firmly against the skin so that it makes a dent in your skin, and press the button. Carefully push and lift the end a few times to make the blood flow a little extra. Then take the tip of the meter and put it against your skin about a quarter inch from the drop and slowly slide it toward the drop. Let as much blood in as it will take. The strip needs to be solid red up almost to the meter,

  • A. There's no difference, but both my husband and I need to test, so having his be red and mine blue is a way to not mix our stored results. The meter keeps track of your readings and gives you a weekly average if you want that level of measuring, so having two with different colors helps us keep our results separate.
