Good, bad and bottom line - CNET Reviews

    Good

The Nikon Coolpix S9300 has fast shooting performance, a wide, long lens in a pocketable body, and several fun and useful shooting modes that help you get the best shot without much effort.

    Bad

Competing models from Canon and Panasonic have longer lenses and more shooting options for the same suggested retail price and the S9300's photos aren't the sharpest when viewed at larger sizes.

    Bottom Line

The compact Nikon Coolpix S9300 is a good choice for anyone after a pure point-and-shoot experience and a long zoom lens. But, depending on needs, you might want to wait for a price drop.

    Rated 3.7 out of 5★áby 50reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5★áby Just what I was looking for! I wanted a small camera that took a good quality pictures. I love the continuous option, perfect for the perfect sport pic. I am very pleased with this camera and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a small good quality camera. 06/14/2012
Rated 5 out of 5★áby Big digital SLR features in a travel camera size. I have a digital Nikon D70 that is a fantastic camera. I have the need for a pocket size camera with a powerful zoom lens. This little Nikon S9300 has a built in zoom that is equavilent to a 450mm zoom lens on a film camera. The photos are great and the features are equal to my D70. My only complaint is that the tripod socket has plastic threads that strip out easily. 09/02/2012
Rated 3 out of 5★áby Every time you take a night picture it takes forever to allow you to take another, with regular day pictures still not fast enough. Too slow for what it cost. 12/20/2012
Rated 1 out of 5★áby Poor I just decided to upgrade on my Coolpix S8100 so I bought the S9300 and went on vacation down to the Florida Keys. As I was taking pictures the camera deleted the first ones I took. I lost about 100 pics and I know they were the best ones. Brought it back and ordered the Coolpix S8200. I will advise you on this one. My sister in law has it and loves it. 11/29/2012
Rated 4 out of 5★áby Camera I like the size of the screen and one big plus is that I can zoom and crop my pictures before I go and have them printed. It also keeps the copy that was cropped so you have both if you want them. That I was impressed with. Less time at the store printing them. ONLY ONE thing I didn't like is that the camera doesn't come with a memory card. I had to go and buy one when I rec'd the camera. This is the first camera I bought that didn't come with one. That is why I gave it four stars. 01/08/2013
Rated 2 out of 5★áby Great concept but a little short in the execution. I love the features that come with this camera. Great pictures, 18 times zoom is nice for making close things closer and playing with perspective. The HD video is excellent quality but this is where the trouble begins. I don't know if the video mode uses a lot of power but it is during videos that the "battery low" and then soon the "battery exhausted" problem occurs. That's the first problem.Problem 2. When ever this camera is used where it is cool such as below 60 F, the "Battery Low" and then soon the "Battery exhausted" problem occurs.Problem 3. The GPS is a great feature if it worked consistently. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I've hiked for over five hours with the GPS enabled and logging on and not one data point is logged. Other times it works fine. Sometimes It locks onto the satelites in under ten seconds and the picture is tagged. Other times I can stand for 15 minutes and it never locks onto any satelites - and this is out in the open!Problem 4. Sometime for no reason it just locks up with the lens extended. None of the buttons are active and the display is frozen. Only removing the battery for a few seconds brings it back.Problem 5. The battery/memory card compartment door has a nasty habit of opening. A good thing the battery and memory card are held in place by other means other than the door.Problem 6. While most of the pictures are well focused, this camera does not focus in low light sunset/sunrise conditions. I've lost more great sunset opportunities because this camer always yields a fuzzy picture. In conclusion, great idea but the quality isn't the same as it was with other Nikons I've owned. 03/07/2013
Rated 4 out of 5★áby Love The Zoom: Still Some Issues With Focus I bought my S9300 to replace a series of Hewlett Packard cameras that have given me great service over the years. This is my first Nikon, but I have had several Canon film cameras that I really liked. This camera has an incredible number of features for such a small package and I am generally pleased with its operation. There is one recurring issue that I wish there was a setting to fix, and that is the autofocus not attaining a clear focus in low light landscape shots, such as sunsets and lightning storms. The focus is frequently blurred, even though I have tried several techniques to force it to lock onto the near foreground or nearby landmarks. Eventually, it may acquire a decent focus, and I can afford to shoot many shots until it gets a focus lock. It is just annoying that there is not a way to set the focus to infinity. I would also like to have a way to open the shutter for a set amount of time to capture lightning storms, but that is apparently not possible with this camera. The flash is in a curious location, as well. I have managed to get some incredible pictures with this camera and am still learning all the features and functions, so I plan to keep this one and keep looking for a camera that has just a few more features so I can shoot the scenes I like to shoot. Otherwise this is a fine camera and I would recommend it as a purchase or a gift for anyone. The zoom is incredible and is essential for wildlife shots and scenery. 08/02/2012
Rated 5 out of 5★áby WOW what a camera I've owned the S9100 for some time and felt it was time to update my wife's camera, ie: give her my 9100 and upgrade myself to the 9300. What an upgrade, they changed the position of the hook-up - very nice. GPS, good addition, How about a pad for your thumb while your taking pictures, On and on the 9300 is a great upgrade over and 9100 which is a outstanding camera. Overall the S9300 is one outstanding camera which I'm proud to own. 05/31/2012
