Always looking for a way to drive record sales, a number of the major labels in Nashville joined forces earlier this year to release a compilation of their best material. Totally Country was a big hit with consumers, containing a whopping seventeen tracks from country music's most popular acts. The labels offered the public an opportunity to own some of the top songs from the last few years without having to purchase seventeen different albums. Now comes Volume 2.

From the poppy sounds of Carolyn Dawn Johnson ("I Don't Want You To Go"), to the traditional leanings of George Strait ("The Best Day"), Totally Country: Vol. 2 has something for everyone. If you like your country with a little bit of grit, Trick Pony's "Just What I Do" should satisfy. For the good-time Charlies out there, Tracy Byrd goes "Ten Rounds With Jose Cuervo," one of the coolest drinking songs ever written. Newcomer Blake Shelton breaks out of prison with the help of his cousin and a blue-tick hound, on the cleverly written, "Ol' Red."

Travis Tritt never sounded better than he does on "Modern Day Bonnie And Clyde," a song equal parts country and bluegrass. Session great Jerry Douglas peels monster licks from his dobro with flaming fingers, as Tritt shares this tale of two modern day outlaws big on reckless courage and short on brains. Montgomery Gentry takes us to the place where they were born and raised on "My Town," while guitar-slinger Keith Urban's No.1 hit, "But For The Grace Of God," reminds us that things could always be worse.

The album is overflowing with hit material by artists you wouldn't normally expect to hear together, unless you were listening to top-forty radio. The pop piano sounds of Phil Vassar ("That's When I Love You") fits in nicely with the California surf-country of Gary Allan ("The One") and the hardcore country of Mark Chesnutt ("She Was"). Lee Ann Womack holds her own against the male competition with her smoldering cover of Rodney Crowell's "Ashes By Now."

Chris Cagle's first No. 1 single, "I Breathe In, I Breathe Out," a song that helped push the singer's debut album, Play It Loud, past the gold mark, is one of the standout cuts on Totally Country: Vol. 2, along with the Joe Nichols chart-topper, "The Impossible." Both songs go to the heart of human emotion. Other noteworthy cuts include: Tammy Cochran's passionate "Life Happened," Rascal Flatts' "I'm Movin' On," and triple threat artist Brad Paisley's bass-heavy "Wrapped Around."

Various artist collections usually come loaded with a few hits and a ton of obscure album tracks that nobody really wants. Totally Country: Vol. 2 offers one great song after another. Let's hope the label heads in Nashville are already working on Totally Country: Vol. 3.
