Book Information

The following content was provided by the publisher.
Enormously visceral, emotionally gripping, and imbued with the belief that justice is possible even after the most horrific of crimes, Sebold's compelling memoir of her rape at the age of 18 is a story that takes hold and won't let go.

Every young girl should read this This book is amazing. It might be difficult for some to read, but I think every young girl should read it. I started reading it a few days ago and am about half-way finished. It's one of those books I don't want to put down. Alice Sebold takes you there. She makes you feel like everything that she experienced is happening to you. I keep asking myself if I would have been able to handle each situation she faced with as much composure as she represents herself to have. The answer is "no." It's inspirational and whether any girl has been a victim of any crime or not, it expresses hope and understanding. Although some might consider the subject matter "taboo," I don't think anyone who reads it should walk away feeling as if it's a subject that cannot be discussed because R*** (Wal-mart considers the word "profane") is a terrible reality - it's not a work of fiction - and it's something that young girls should grow up knowing about and knowing that in the event (God forbid) that they become a victim of this heinous crime, they can talk about it. 02/18/2010
Very Depressing Book Well the book was very graphic and depressing. Also know that the subject matter was difficult to discuss during a book club meeting because of the sensitive nature. She describes in graphic detail the mechanics of what happened but not how she was feeling as things happened. If you have experienced being a victim of a crime or being around someone who was a victim, then this might have some theraputic value. I highly reccommend her novel, "Lovely Bones" however as a must read. 07/02/2007
