Romance writer Jayne Ann Krentz uses the pseudonym Amanda Quick for her historical fiction pieces. She has written numerous books under this name including Surrender, Scandal, Seduction, Affair, With This Ring, Burning Lamp, and Quicksilver. Krentz was born in 1948 and earned her B.A in History at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and later she obtained a Masters degree in Library Science from San Jose State University. Her title The Mystery Woman made The New York Times Best Seller List for 2013.
Enormously popular romance writer Quick scores big again with this delightful, frothy love story featuring Charlotte Arkendale, who is left to fend for herself following her mother's death and her stepfather's subsequent squandering of the family fortune. She creates an intriguing profession of investigating the intentions, honorable or otherwise, of her clients' suitors. Unfortunately, one of her clients winds up dead, and Charlotte is determined to find the killer. Baxter St. Ives, the required love interest, is also investigating the murder.
Predictably, the two join forces, struggling with their growing feelings for each other. These two characters are so likable that we can only hope to see them again in a sequel. As always, Quick understands her readers and delivers an entertaining, sensual, albeit paper-thin, plot. Add this one to your "guilty pleasures" list and buy multiple copies. Charlotte Arkendale knew all there was to know about men. After all, she'd made a career out of steering marriage-minded women away from untrustworthy members of the opposite sex.
Yet nothing could have prepared her for Baxter St. Ives--an arresting stranger too daring, too determined, too dangerous to be her new man-of-affairs. Still, perhaps he was the perfect person to help Charlotte investigate the recent murder of one of her clients. So she gave him a chance, never realizing that Baxter, a gifted scientist, would soon conduct a risky exploration into the alchemy of desire, with Charlotte as his subject.
But even as he sets out to seduce Charlotte, a twisted killer lies in wait, ready to part the lovers... or see them joined together forever--in death.
