I would definitely call it espresso. To me, dark cherry implies there's some red to it. This piece doesn't have any that I can see. You can definitely tell it's wood and not a painted black piece, though.

Nonetheless, I also bought two cans of satin black paint (spray) and gave it two coats of paint.
