Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Serger for beginner or pro! I received this machine a little over a month ago and have already put it through the rounds. I am an avid sewer and have been sewing for over 20 years. I was replacing an old singer serger. I have found this serger to be a great machine and a real value at just under $200.00. It is easy to re thread, which for me is a real selling point for a serger. The rolled hem is quick and easy. This machine is a great machine at a great price. I do have one complaint... this machine is loud, which really surprised me, I have used older machines that seem to have a more quiet smooth stitch. However for the money and features you can't go wrong with this machine. 11/29/2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great buy!! I have only used once, so far. It seems to be solid and operates very smoothly. I have made one skirt and the machine worked beautifully. So far, I am VERY happy with it. Would absolutely recommend it. 10/09/2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by Makes sewing fun again! High quality machine for the price (compared to others I looked at before I bought). The color-coded threading guide is great! Shipping was within a few days after ordering and I haven't had any trouble with it since I received it. Highly recommend it for a novice seamstress. 09/28/2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by Twice satisfied Brother Serger owner! I recently decided to give my decade old Brother Serger to my daughter. I then puchased this newer model. I'm pleased for a second time with my purchase and am impressed with how much quieter it is. I like the videos that came with it as well. The ideas video was a great refresher on other applications for the machine. I can highly recommend this product for a good sturdy workhorse. 09/02/2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by Love it :-) I am very satisfied with my purchase. I just finished my first project on it, a little summer dress, and I am very impressed how easy and quick it was with using the serger. I can’t wait to do something else. You do have to play with the tension and different stitches, but it was easy. I’ve had to re-thread my machine and it wasn’t hard either. I am very very happy with it :-) 08/22/2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by I am very happy with this value-priced machine. It runs smoothly, and I've already completed a wide variety of stitches on several projects. I found helpful directions on using the ruffler attachment from an Internet creative sewing site. The Brother instructional CDs and website were less helpful. Learning to deal with thread changes and threading up different stitches takes patience but is worth the effort because sewing becomes a breeze once the set-up is complete. Ask for help from a fellow serger or get lessons if you are not inclined toward the mechanical as this machine has much more capability than a regular sewing machine and, as a result, takes longer to learn about all the moving parts. A serger sews much faster than a regular sewing machine, although both machines are needed to complete most projects. 08/19/2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by Buy This One over Singer Brand If you are teetering between buying this one and singer brand. GET THIS ONE! It's more user friendly. Great for first time, serger users. So if you never have used one before, just hang in there. It takes time to learn a new type of machine. Use the right needle for the type of material. Use quality thread. The cheap walmart kind (sorry walmart) will always break, because of the low quality. The discs included will help you a lot. You need this machine to make your sewing projects look not so homemade. Anything you make will have a more professional look. 08/14/2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great for beginner. I have never used a serger before and I'm in love!!! Soooo easy to us and it comes with great instructions. It runs nice and smooth and quiet. The color coded knobs makes it easier to understand how to thread. I'm buying one for my mom. I don't know why I waited so long to buy one. 08/13/2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by Easy to thread I don't do a lot of serging, so I thought the investment of a couple hundred dollars, versus $800+ for a more prestigious brand, was worth a try. It arrived at my home via free shipping within 2 days of placing my order. I was immediately surprised at the heaviness of the box; this machine has a sturdy, quality "feel" to it. I couldn't wait to get it set up and start serging. I watched the vidoes, which were minimally helpful, but included a few useful tips, particularly about threading. Compared to my previous serger, this machine is very, very easy to thread. In fact, the slide out lever for the lower looper is so easy that at first, I didn't understand that all I had to do was lay the thread across the lever and push it in. You still have to thread the final hole in the looper manually, but that's a breeze after getting the thread so easily through the internal mechanism. Threading of the upper looper and needles is fully exposed and easy. This serger does not seem inexpensive or cheaply made. Only a couple of things stood out to me as cost cutting measures. First, as others have mentioned, the thread holder is flimsy plastic, but it seems to work just fine. Second, the rolled hem function requires removal of the stitch finger; on my previous Juki serger, all I had to do was slide a lever to move it out of the way. However, the process is easy, and there is a slot on the machine to snap the part into for storage so that it doesn't get misplaced. Third, there is only one screw holding both needles in place. I found that annoying on first use; when I needed to remove one of the needles, both of them fell out, but that's probably something I'll get better at over time. Other than that, I have already enjoyed using my new Brother serger and am pleased with the stitch quality, ease of operation, and the price. 08/06/2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great buy for the price! I just started out learning how to sew and had no background in sewing ..... this Serger is amazing and user friendly. The only gripe I have is the instructional DVD that came with it, isn't very helpful with threading the machine I just did a Youtube video search and had the machine up and running in minutes. I Love, Love, Love this machine!!! 07/15/2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by I'm in love... I was favorably impressed at the way it was packaged when it arrived. I had not used a serger for quite some years, and I must admit that I felt a bit intimidated. However, it is quite user friendly. I also like that fact that it is a solid machine- and you can feel the power. Overall, it is a great value, and a pleasure to use. I look forward to giving it another review a couple of years from now. My hubby knows that I love to sew, and out of all the wonderful gifts he has given me over the years, I love this the best! 07/14/2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by A Steal AWSOME! This machine is wonderful. I am real picky about machines and this one exceeds my expectation. I have had it about 2 weeks. I know how to thread it already. It is the most I have gotten for my money in a long, long time. It is a nice weight not too. This is my first "Brother. I am so impressed that I am looking at a Brother embroidery machine. Oh, I almost forgot about the 2 other feet and videos included. I am still excited about this purchase. 03/03/2010
Rated 5 out of 5 by Why did I wait so long? I was a true Serger Phobic. Threading! Tension! Ahhh! But, my children got me gift cards for Christmas so, I took the plunge. Did a lot of homework on them and finally decided on the Brother 1034D. I love it. The videos were helpful, although a bit difficult to view since the picture was small. The instruction manual was also helpful. I haven't figured out where I'm supposed to oil the thing yet...does it need oiling? I had some thread problems when I replaced what came with the machine but, discovered they were my fault. Solution on thread problems is that you've probably threaded something wrong or the thread got hung up on the spool. The machine is unforgiving in that respect. So, stay calm and check it out. Tension seems to be fairly easy to manage at this point and I have played with it quite a bit with no problems. Haven't mastered the rolled hem yet, but fabric may have been the problem. It sews and cuts thru two layers of denim with no problem at all. Bottom line is the Brother 1034D is a great little machine for a beginning scaredy cat. 06/23/2008
Rated 1 out of 5 by Maybe I got a bad machine???? Very excited to get this serger but have tried threading it many times and one thread will just not stay in. I think its a design problem. So needless to say I will be returning this product. 08/23/2010
Rated 1 out of 5 by It doesn't work!!! I received the Brother Lay In Serger for Christmas last year and have had it to the repair shop twice. The first time, he said there was something wrong inside the lower looper. He repaired it, I took it home, it worked for a very shor time, then it stopped serging. The second time I took it back, he said I just didn't know how to thread it. No one there would show me how. He has since gone out of business. I have contacted Brother via email and no help there. I have spent countless hours trying to thread this machine and I can't find anyone who can help me. Can't even find anyone local who would even look at it. I would not recommend this machine, as it still is sitting brand new and I am very dissatisfied with its non-performance. 04/08/2010
Rated 4 out of 5 by serger This is my first serger, and it is a bit early to tell, but am enjoying it so far. 11/11/2009
Rated 4 out of 5 by Good Value Threading instructions vague. Arrow color does not machine. 08/03/2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great for Beginning Projects Easy threading instructions and color code on the inside and outside of machine. This machine has worked perfectly for my first few projects and I look forward to using it in the future. 01/19/2010
Rated 5 out of 5 by A very helpful product This product is really cool 09/23/2009
Rated 1 out of 5 by The first day that I used the machine it broke. The presser foot arm snapped in half. 12/08/2011
Rated 1 out of 5 by This product was defective, I wasted hours trying to figure what I was doing wrong. I think the reality is that one would need to put more into a serger to get the basic quality I was looking for. 11/28/2010
Rated 5 out of 5 by very good serger machina. this machine is the best one from price to function.I will say five star. 10/28/2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by So excited - Brother is tops with me Not going to add a lot of technical information (those before me have done that), but I will say that I love Brother and their easy to follow, user-friendly products. Bravo. I have used it on my latest project and I'm super happy with the results. 10/26/2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by How did I ever live without this Serger! I love my Brother Serger! It's so easy to use! I've had my own sewing machine since I was 6 years old, but I've never had a serger before. The serger makes sewing stretch knits so easy. I've gone crazy now sewing jersey knit tops. It almost takes longer to layout and cut the pattern than it does to serge it together. I definitely recommend this serger. 10/24/2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by I have had several sergers and this one is the greatest. It is like threading a regular machine, meaning IT IS THAT EASY!!!!!!! Most of them are horrible but this Brother machine is great and I have used it several times now and it is serging great. I don't use alot of the features that you can do with a serger but I love this machine. If you need one this is the one to buy. 10/22/2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Serger, easy to thread My first serger and so far so good.I've used it on a couple of projects with very satisfying results and no problems with this product. 10/14/2012

Rated 5 out of 5 by It's a great machine. I had a baby lock and sold it, I moved and now I need one and saw this one. It is a great price and very easy to use. 09/29/2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Machine!! I am a beginner!! I have always wanted a serger but, was afraid to try one because of all the reviews that I have read about how hard it was to thread. Well, I got this machine and man, am I ever glad that I did. It works beautifully and since it came already threaded with little spools of thread, I was able to see how it was threaded and the color coded guide makes it a snap. Took just a few minutes to figure out how to thread it and it looks like a professional seam. I LOVE this serger!!! One hint to offer, Get one of those floss guide thingys from the tooth paste isle to thread the loopers. ( It looks like a big loop that you hook your dental floss in to floss under and around bridge work) Works like a charm. Takes no time to thread the loopers If you want a great serger without the big price, this oen is for you. Have fun!!! 09/27/2012
