Customer Product Reviews

Rated 4.7 out of 5 by 3reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Best version yet. What makes one version of a film more heartrending than another? In this rendition of Jane Eyre, the filmmakers manage to breathe life into the story in a way that I have not seen in any of the others. When turning a beloved novel into a two-hour movie, sometimes the very heart of the story itself gets lost in the many obscure details. That doesn't happen here. I think this version would be Charlotte Bronte's favorite. :) 08/10/2011
Rated 4 out of 5 by Lovely movie. When condensing a novel the size of Bronte's Jane Eyre, things are bound to be cast aside for the sake of the wider story. The important thing for filmmakers to consider in situations such as these is getting hold of the spirits of the story and characters. In general, I think this film did a good job of that.I especially appreciated the attention paid to the more Gothic elements of the story, such as Thornfield itself, the mystery of Bertha, the dreariness of Lowood, and the howling isolation of the moors. I've not seen any other film version of Jane Eyre, but I suspect this aspect of the novel might not have been fully played upon in them. At least not so beautifully. There is much to say for the scenery and the costumes, but I would really like to mention the actors. Wasikowska did a fantastically timid and meek Jane-- passionate at just the right times, as she ought to be. Being a character of rather few lines, she really makes the most of them-- her inflection and facial expressions are really convincing. Fassbender also does a wonderful, brooding, manic, passionate Rochester. He does the arrogance and impulsiveness so well. Though I did rather feel that the more peculiar, humorous side of Rochester's character was neglected by either the writers or the director-- but in the interest of the film, I understand. The actors also share a palpable chemistry, showing even in the way the walk alongside one another.I really did enjoy this movie, but I don't know how much I would have had I not already loved the book. Also, I rented this via the VuDu streaming service, which was-- I thought-- well worth the $3.99. 08/18/2011
