Soul Eater: Parts 3 And 4 (Widescreen)

About this item

As students of the Grim Reaper at Death Weapon Meister Academy, Maka is a Meister and Soul is her Weapon - literally. When they take on the supernatural forces of evil, Soul transforms into a razor-sharp scythe and Maka wields him in battle. He gets deadlier with every defeated soul he consumes and each victory strengthens their bond... but Maka, Soul, and their classmates might not be ready to face the darkness headed their way. After 800 years, the witch Arachne has returned to spin a web of wickedness, leading an army of ghoulish minions in a war against Death Weapon Meister Academy. As demons from the past rise amid betrayal and madness, Maka and Soul are definitely in for the fight of their lives. Luckily for the fate of the world, they're a freakin' lethal team! Contains episodes 27 - 51.

Episodes 30 & 44 Commentary, Soul Eater Late Show, Textless Songs.

Spoken Languages: English, Japanese, Subtitles: English.

First, I think that you should know that I am an adult and female anime fan. I haven't finished watching Soul Eater, yet. I am a couple of episodes into Part 4. I tend to like character-driven stories, but action and art are also important to me. Soul Eater isn't all that strong in character development (thus far), but it does have charming and amusing characterizations, lots of action, and fabulous art. Most of the main characters are either students or teachers at Death Weapon Meister Academy or their enemies. The students are either Meisters who wield the weapons, or the weapons themselves in human form. They are learning to be Shingamis- spirits who are similar to the Grim Reaper. So, these are kids saddled with very serious and dangerous lessons. In fact, they don't spend that much time in school. They are frequently on the front lines of the war against evil spirits. Most of the charm is in their personalities and relationships. Soul (weapon) and Maka (meister) are the main protagonists, but Black * Star and Tsubaki and Death the Kid (with Liz and Patty) are also important. Death the Kid is my favorite student. He suffers from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder in a very funny way. The art is amazing. The anime is very colorful, and the character designs are very original. The backgrounds are superb. The sun and moon seem to have an opinion on the antics going on down below. The buildings balance precariously, looking like a light wind could blow them over. I would call the background art "Expressionistic," but I don't really know if that's correct. There is a lot of humor but also a lot of sadness in the story. One of the children has suffered from abuse. Another deals with the rift between her parents. These kids act like kids, but they also very bravely fight monsters and witches, saving the world over and over. I think that this anime would appeal to almost anyone that likes anime and even some folks who don't.
