Large format and network friendly

Customer review by swimvball

I have been very pleased with this printer/scanner. I need to work with 11"x17" format and this scanner works very well for that. The large format also works well for scanning multiple smaller documents at once and then split each document out as needed. The printing has been fast and reliable. Ink is also reasonably priced compared to competitors. Brother does a very good job making their MFC printers true network capable printers. The print server is in the printer so unlike "networkable" printers from other manufactures I do not have to connect the printer to a Window's computer to be able to print via the network. I run Linux, Mac, and Windows desktops and can print using the network printing from each of them. I have also been very impressed with the printer administration features provided in this device. It has a lot of enterprise level features available to make remote administration of this device a joy. I would definitely be willing to use this printer in a small office environment.

Having owned Brother products in the past, I was excited to shop and discover the combination of price and features represented on the MFC-J6710DW. However, when I began working with this machine on a daily basis, I found it to be less than what I had hoped for and what the sales person assured me of its performance. Slow and very loud mechanical noises while copying right next to my desk is irritating. The color scan feature "streaks" and distorts the colors and image quality, on any quality setting, so much that I only use it for internal company messaging, not for public eyes. The recycling time built into nearly every function is very disappointing. Now that I have to live with this MFC on a daily basis, I am continuously disappointed with its performance, particularly with the features mentioned above. Add to these, the fact that color scanning is such an embarrassment that I hesitate sending scans out into the public and it makes me feel that I am stuck with a lemon.

Well I just got off the phone with Brother technical support. I have been using this machine now for about 3 weeks. I am using a wireless setup. I configured it myself. It was fairly easy to do. I am an architect and work from home mainly. I needed a 11"x17" printer with scan capability previously I was using an HP 2800n. This thing scans to my server, uploads to my FTP sharing site. I am using it with both XP and Win 7 this thing is awesome. The only minor issue I had was the black print was coming out grey, I played with the settings for about 2 weeks, figuring it was just a user error. Finally I gave up. I contacted technical support we worked through some issues, in about 30 minutes I am printing as good of quality as my laser. It is so much quieter than my laser or old inkjets. This blows HP out of the water. We will see how it holds up, we have the larger laser in our corporate office. I set that up 2 years ago and it is still trucking. Great product. I am buying 2 more for our remote offices.

Needs some work

I bought this primarily for it's large scanner bed. It works quite well for that with a minor problem. When paper is placed against the left/top alignment guide, the scan does not start right at the left/top of item being scanned. Paper type selection is very limited. Does not handle photo paper feeding from a tray very well. The extra sheet feeder is hard to put paper in. Frequent "fail to feed" errors. It is also very hard to get paper to align properly. Frequently the paper comes through slightly skewed. Extremely difficult to get both sides aligned properly when needing to print on both sides. When doing multiple sheets or sides, it is necessary to wait until machine goes through its cycling before putting paper back in the feeder. Feeder can only handle one page at a time. A serious drawback. Needs: Machine needs to register the paper precisely from the extra sheet feeder. The extra sheet feeder should be able to handle at least 20 pages of paper.

Very Nice Printer

I've been using it for a week now, and I love it. I've used it for just about everything except FAX, including scanning and printing 11x17. Easy to set up. Easy and intuitive to use. Fast. Good control center software, good onboard display and controls. I have experience with a LOT of printers, ever since my first computer in 1979, and so far this is one of the best. Time will tell, though. The bottom line for me is that I can't believe I got such a capable printer for so little money. The weaknesses so far are minor: Poor or nonexistent instructions for the software (but it was fairly intuitive for me, a highly experienced user of new printers and scanners). Flimsy paper output tray (but that seems to be the norm these days). Rather long wait for first page when printing in reverse order (almost 2 minutes when doing a 12-page Word document). And the biggest one... colors, though fairly true-to-life, are generally not very intense. The only time I've gotten intense colors is when copying a photo onto glossy photo paper.

Great 11 x 17 Scanner

Customer review by tbonejeff

4.0 stars 3/21/2012 by tbonejeff

I bought this unit for its ability to scan and print 11" x 17." In most respects it does this very well. I would prefer that the scanning software would show each page view as it is scanned, instead of waiting until all sheets are scanned before showing the scanned pages. You have to hope that each page scanned correctly, 'cause you won't know until you finish. Also, I use this mostly to print 9 1/2" x 12 1/2" paper (for music), and I'm apparently stuck using the sheet feeder, as the larger feed tray won't feed this non-standard size, even though the paper fits just fine. It would be so much easier to have the printer feed automatically. The above points made, I am largely pleased. For the cost, the unit is an excellent value, especially with the 11 x 17 scan bed. Since I am the only person using this printer, the somewhat flimsy feel doesn't bother me too much. As others have mentioned, it would be nice if the sheet feeder at the back would allow more than one sheet. But, for the price, I don't think you can object too vigorously.

Best Brother Printer I Ever Purchased

Customer review by Eclecticart

This is my sixth Brother printer and it is as reliable and economical as all the others I have purchased. If you want to save on ink, then any Brother printer will be your best purchase. This printer, though, by far is the most economical printer I have ever owned. I have printed 1000s of pages and have only changed the cartridges once. I use the high yield LC79 cartridges which have proven to be the most cost effective. The print quality is excellent; photos are brilliant and clear. I downloaded the iPrint and Scan app for my andriod phone and tablet and it works wonderfully. I bought this printer specifically because it prints on both sides of the paper (duplex printing) and because I can use 11x17 paper. The enlarge and shrink functions for copies is very useful and the wireless scan feature is a time saver. This is a totally affordable wireless, multifunction printer that does everything any small business can want.

Nice All-In-One Printer

I bought this MFC-J6710DW because I wanted the large format paper handling (11"x17") and the auto-duplexing feature. Haven't used the fax features, don't really need them. Pros: -menus are easy to follow -wireless works well -two seperate paper trays -large photocopying surface (up to 13"x19") -decent print speeds -auto duplex -nice software features Cons: -It's huge! -paper tray system is awkard when adding paper -to use envelopes you have to remove all paper and reset sliding arms to letter size. -goes through ink pretty quickly -has had a few paper jams -scanner resolution is only 1200dpi max Overall, I am satisfied with this printer and it has been working well. I'll be trying to use the larger capacity ink cartridges LC79, to see if I can get better ink life. My yellow cartridge is nearly empty after printing about 150 pages with mixed text and graphics, plus about 15 photos. The other color cartridges are down to around 30% level. The black cartridge is at about 45%. These were the cartridges that came with the printer which are the low capacity type LC75.

NOT so good

Customer review by BYRAGTMAN

2.0 stars 1/13/2014 by BYRAGTMAN

While the print quality of this machine is high, very good photo and text printing. The design of the machine is really ridiculous. Case in point, when the machine runs out of letter size paper, it just automatically switched to the next full tray. The machine will tell you several weeks in advance that you are running out of ink, but will not tell you that you are out of one size or the other of paper. My LOW INK warning has been on for 3 weeks now, and I still have not run out of ink. But twice in the last week, the machine has switched from printing on 8.5 X 11 paper to 8.5 X 14 paper when the letter size ran out. True, you will not lose a page of document, but you will also now have to trim the longer pages down. What idiot thought of that feature? Also how about making a tray that will hold an entire ream of paper? 500 pages instead of 250?
