Laurell K. Hamilton was born in Heber Springs, Arkansas on February 19, 1963. After her mother died in a car crash in 1969, she was raised by her grandmother in Sims, Indiana. She received degrees in English and biology from Marion College, which is now Indiana Wesleyan University. She writes the Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter series and the Meredith Gentry series. Her title, Affliction, made The New York Times Best Seller List for 2013.
Anita Blake began her career hunting monsters, which she still does, but now she also sleeps with them-Jean-Claude, Vampire Master of the city of St. Louis being her main squeeze. In her latest adventure, Anita and her soc io pathic assassin friend Edward are in the Seattle area working as U.S. Marshals to help the police track down a preternatural serial killer. The book opens as they survey the multiple body parts of the most recent victim. Both quickly realize that this is the work of the Harlequin, a secret organization of vampire enforcers. The targets are gold weretiger's but also, it is soon established, Anita as well.
Verdict: In 1993, Hamilton got her paranormal series off to a strong start with the fast-paced mystery/adventure Guilty Pleasures. Over the years what was once refreshingly different has become tedious. Her 20th title has some entertaining moments, but the plot meanders, and conversations and situations are often repetitive. Still, this is a very popular series and demand could be high.
