About this item
Joseph Banks was the young botanist who accompanied Captain James Cook on his first voyage of circumnavigation. With his fellow botanist, Daniel Solander, he collected over seven hundred hitherto unknown species of plants, which were recorded in drawings by Sydney Parkinson. Banks intention, to publish a complete set of engravings of these plants, was not realized in his lifetime and it was only two hundred years later, with the largest direct printing project ever undertaken in the history of the Fine Arts, that Banks'Florilegium came to fruition. This film traces that first voyage of discovery , visiting the places where Banks and Solander recorded specimens: Madeira, Rio de Janeiro Historical Editions' massive undertaking in producing a full-color edition of Banks' Florilegium. A rich mixture of art, history, science and travel, the program gives a remarkably clear insight into the thirst for knowledge and the search for beauty which characterize so much of eighteenth-century achievement. "The men who were shot into space in the 1960 met nobody and brought back nothing in the way of arts or literature. By contrast, the men who sailed off into the Pacific two hundred years earlier did a lot of drawing, a lot of writing and a staggering amount of collecting. Not having cameras passively to record what they saw, they had to look, scribble and remember. What they brought back changed the way educated Europeans thought about both nature and culture. No exploration had more vivid results of this sort than James Cook's voyage round the world and through the Pacific from 1768 to 1771.
