  • A. Yes is does. Make sure you setup the USB modem according to the Operating system you have. It is critical that you install the Win 7 64 bit setup .exe file or the Win 7 32 bit setup.exe file. Otherwise it will not install correctly.

There are a few free services like NetZero that work well, but the free services are usually limited in amount of data volume.

  • A. The short answer is no. Yes Phone and Ethernet cables look similar but they are not compatible with each other. An Ethernet card and modem are entirely different and connecting the cords could damage some equipment if hooked up improperly. Basically there are three choices to solve the problem Buy: an external modem, get DSL service, OR get cable internet.

Works perfectly with Windows 8

Customer has been confirmed to have purchased the item from Walmart.

I was a little concerned when I read other reviews that said it wouldn't work with Windows 8, but decided to try it anyhow. For work, there's one FTP connection I have to use that only works over dialup (yeah I know, seems a little archaic). Like a lot of current machines, my new Win8 laptop doesn't have a modem. Although the list of supported OSes on the package does not include Windows 8, I found that the modem was immediately recognized when I plugged it into an available USB port. In fact, I originally thought it failed - there was no pop-up indicating that drivers were being installed or "new device found". But when I opened Control Panel and checked devices, there it was - no driver installation required! I created a new connection for the modem by opening Control Panel and clicking "View network status and tasks" under the "Network and Internet" heading and then "Set up a new connection or network". This opened a properties dialog that is similar to the dialog in previous operating system versions. I simply copied details over from my previous system. I changed a few of the properties settings: 1) on the Options tab, I clicked "Display progress while connecting" and 2) on the Sharing tab, I cleared all checkboxes under Internet Connection Sharing. By doing this - particularly the first box ("Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection") - your dialup connection won't interfere with your primary broadband connection. The easiest way to launch the new connection is to click the connection status icon in the notification area of the taskbar, which opens a list of all available connections. Click the modem connection and then the Connect button - disconnects the same way. It works perfectly - seems just as fast as the internal modem in my old system. The only thing that's different is that there's no sound. Although I was disappointed by this initially, it's not a huge deal since my FTP client tells me when it's connected (approx. 10 seconds) and a little connection status dialog gets updated during the connection process. The modem itself is small - about 2 and a half inches long and 3/4 inch wide - takes up virtually no space in my laptop bag.

Perfect for dialup!!! ^_^

Not only was the value exceptional, the performance is far superior to my ancient built in modem which got fried by lightning! Installation was easy, and within a few minutes my old Acer Aspire laptop with Vista was up and running even better than before! Since I live in the sticks and DSL isn't available here, dialup is my only option right now. One thing I'd recommend to anyone who purchases this, is please make sure to disable the old modem before using any USB based one, as the computer will recognize the primary modem first. After I got past that point, everything else was easy and I couldn't believe that something so inexpensive worked better than much higher priced units! Glad I looked around and compared not only the different prices but the reviews as well. People seem really happy with this little modem, and I highly recommend it to anyone!

When I purchased my laptop, I didn't realize that it might not have a phone jack plug; it didn't and I had to find an alternative solution to my dial up internet service. I got this product and it works very well. It is really inexpensive and does exactly what I needed it to do. I would recommend this to anyone that needs a way to connect to dial up if they have a computer with only usb and ethernet ports.

I have windows 7 (64-bit) and it works perfectly. I plugged it in, and it automatically installed the driver for the modem. The little CD included wasn't need at all. The price was excellent, too. It's small in size and won't clutter up your desk. If you're looking for a dial-up modem, this is the BEST one. :)

Everyone should have a landline/pots MODEM

While I have not used this extensivley as I have a wireless internet connection, this can be a lifesaver when the wireless links go down. The newer computers, both desk and laptop seem to have ditched the built in modems, but if you use your lap top at many locations, frequently only landline POTS is available. Unit is small and compact and will fit in a laptop carrying case or backpack with no problems. Is plug and play with Win7.
