Our house is over 2800 square feet and this humidifier does an excellent job of putting moisture through out the house. The fan, however, is noisy. There is no way we can put it in our family room or our bedroom. We put it in our foyer and it is able to blow moisture all over the house. We did have a couple of problems. First, we did not like the smell. The problem was the filter. To fix it, we soaked the filter in a vinegar and water solution, as the instruction sheet suggested. This worked! The other problem is that after only 10 days of use, the unit started making a loud noise similar to the sound of the sirens on police cars. Because of this, we are going to return this unit and order a replacement. Usually Walmart stands behind what they sell, so we are not expecting any problems exchanging the unit. If we have any problems exchanging the unit, I will amend this review. If you live in a dry climate like we do (Arizona), this humidifier will really help.

The Lasko 9-Gallon Recirculating Multi-Room Humidifier works great in my house. It's February in Michigan and this unit has kept our 1800 sq. ft. home at a comfortable humidity even on days with single-digit temperatures. It's easy to fill, using its own fillable container with handles. It has a viewable section so that you can see the water flow. The only down-side so far has been the fact that it doesn't automatically shut off when empty. It just keeps running. The only indication you have that it is empty is the lack of water flow in the view window. In the worst weather, I have to fill it daily. Other than that, it has been a great unit so far. I haven't had to replace a filter yet as I've only had this a couple of weeks so I don't know how expensive they are yet or if there are mold issues. Supposedly there shouldn't be but we'll see. I haven't found anything in the directions indicating to add something to the water for microbe prevention so I'm hoping it won't grow mold. I'll be keeping my eye out for that.

In the past we have always had a humidifier in only the bedrooms and they finally quit working so we decided to go for a whole house one this time. Great humidifier for the money! Our house is 2500 sq ft and this has been working great.

    Good humidifier...But...

It does what a humidifier is supposed to do... relieve dry air.... BUT, Let's start with the pros and cons: or cons and pros as the case may be: Cons: #1- It is Loud. On 1,2 or 3 fan settings, it is loud. We have it in our living room/dining room downstairs (the two are one big room) and we turn it off during the day unless we're gone. (we have to turn the TV up if it's on and we get chilly sitting there because of the blowing air.) #2- Filling it is easy (as long as you have a high kitchen faucet and a deep sink like we do) but messy. The lid likes to leak so DO NOT tip it when you carry it to the unit. The directions say to carry it just like you're going to put it inside the unit...Wrong!! We carry it upside down TILL you get to the unit ... then, and only then, do you turn it over and slide it into the humidifier! Any leakage will go into the unit. I don't know if this falls under a 'con' but it is general maintenance: Do what the directions say-clean it with diluted vinegar. It says to soak the filter in vinegar water to make it last longer. We actually ran the unit with half gallon of vinegar in the water for about an hour. This takes off the 'white' streak you start to see in the water gage that runs down the side of the unit and descales the unit inside. It also descales the filter to make it last longer. Because we do not like the smell of vinegar in the house we then took the unit to the bathtub. We pulled off the top of the unit and set it aside (fan/pump & controls), and emptied the bottom pan (where the water sits) down the tub drain. We cleaned it (the bottom pan) with baking soda water in the tub to cut the vinegar smell. We then soaked the filter in Dr. Teal's eucalyptus & spearmint Epsom bath soaking salts for just a few minutes. (we needed to get rid of the vinegar smell) We love the smell of Dr. Teal's and, on a bright note, it only had a slight scent when we turned the unit back on making the house smell good. You could just start by taking the unit to the bathtub and cleaning it there but that won't let the vinegar squirt on the inside of the water gage glass to clean it. Pros: #1- It does what it's made for! It will humidify the WHOLE house, upstairs and down! Some of the units we have had were quiet but they didn't put out the humidity we required to make our home comfortable. #2- We could put it upstairs and run it all day but there is no need. It does its job without being on all day using electricity. And some ppl would like the 'white noise' at night should you not mind it near your bedroom. #3- Depending on where you set the humidity control (high or low) it will shut on and off depending on how much you want in your home. I would recommend a humidity sensor that gives you a number, then you can adjust the high/low humidity setting on the humidifier to keep it in the numbered humidity range you require. (Walmart has a whole range of weather sensor/humidity indicators to choose from under $20.) #4- Shipping only cost me a little UNDER a dollar to have it shipped to my home! And it arrived 4 days later! I can't drive to any local store for a dollar! #5- It is on wheels. You can roll it to where ever you want. #6- While most units just have a filter sit in water this one has it above the water and water flows over it all the time keeping it fresher. This filter does not sit in the base of water. After getting used to filling it and cleaning it, it does exactly what a whole house humidifier should do. Overall, for the price and shipping we like it and it was worth the money.

This humidifier preforms well. I like the wide range the settings give you. I have a problem with maintenance because the outer wall of the upper section is not strong enough to lay on it's side. It is a concern of how to keep it clean and not damage it. It holds a lot of water!

    • A. No, the fan will keep running, you can tell by the pump that circulates the water up to the viewing port. There will be a steady stream of water if there is any in the bottom. At max humidity setting it should run for over a day without filling though so you have a lot of time to check. I usually fill 3 canisters and then a 4th that will empty as the machine evaporates the water, this allows for about 5-6 more hours of operation.

    • A. No. It just keeps running. The only indications you will have (other than dry air) are that you will hear it running continuously and you can see the water flow in the view window on the front. I've had it for 2 weeks and I just added filling it to my daily routine. On wetter days, I find that the refill unit still has water in it so I don't have to do anything.

    • A. I read through the instructions and it did not have any mention of shutting off if empty. So, I totally emptied it and put it back together and it ran without any water. It did not shut off automatically. I believe that is why they have the plastic, see-through, gage on the outside of the unit. When the unit is running, water is pumped and flowing against it. When you don't see any water flowing down the inside of the gage.... it needs refilled. It takes 3 jug refills to fill the unit clear full.

    • A. No, it does not have a shut-off connected to the water, but it does to the fan engine to prevent over heating. The fan keeps running when there is insufficient water to affect the humidity levels.
