Lens is amazing in low light situations. Use almost every time I go out to use my camera (d90). This is a must buy if you are thinking of doing low light pictures or portraits

Does not AF (autofocus) with the D3000, D5000

The AF only works with the DSLR cameras that have the autofocus motor within the camera body - if you are using a D3000, D5000, etc you need the AF-S. However this AF lens will focus with versions like the D7000 and others because they have the built-in focus drive motor. You can read this info from the Nikon website.

I tend to like zoom lenses more because I like to control the distance between me and the object I'm photographing but this lens is a great one for portrait photography so I added it to my collection. So far so good, I like it. It's nice and light and small so the camera isn't so heavy which makes it good for every day photography too.

Originally i had the 1.4 model that is lighter and built with less fluid movement. It was a nice beginner lense and I still have it and use it for my other Nikon. However when I purchased my 300s I went all out and made the effort for quality lenses with a good feel and movement. After I purchased my 1.8 I was so surprised at how the lense felt. Not just in my hand or in the camera, but when i was taking pictures and the controls. It was fluid and solid feel in the movement. Like the feeling you get when you close the door on a high-end auto. You know you are dealing with quality with this lens. The 1.4 model performed well enough, but because of the light materials it is build with, it does not have the quality movement the 1.8 does. The difference is not in the movement alone, the pictures were amazing and really surprised me in difference between the two lenses. I'm not a pro photographer, so I can't elaborate on all the spec and logic behind the difference. I can only say that I love (LOVE) this lens. It is a great combo with my Nikon 300s

The 50mm f/1.8D is the very first lens I bought along with my first Nikon. I tried them both out at the camera store before making my purchase. I found it to be a great first lens for so many reasons. Being an affordable fast prime lens is on top of that list. I've used it for black & white as well as color film photography. It is small and light that walking around photographing is not tiring. The filter size being 52mm makes it affordable to experiment with different filters. Though the autofocus doesn't work with entry-level DSLR, I'm not lowering how I rate this lens for it because the 50mm f/1.8D worked with the film camera I bought with it, F5. When I got my first DSLR, it worked just fine with it too. It focuses fast and the images are sharp and clear. When I want to be more creative than what the camera does, i manually set the aperture on the lens and manually adjust the focus to infinity for long exposures. For the price, you really can't complain about the value you get out of it. The 50mm f/1.8 is a great first lens when learning photography and provides years of use.

This lens is very sharp and performs well in low light conditions. It has a nice bokeh (out of focus blur). It is full frame, as opposed to DX only, which is nice as I still occasionally use 35 mm film (normally I shoot with a D7000). Even better it has an infrared focus marking, taking the guess work out when I shoot IR film. Those of us who grew up using film appreciate the focus scale and the depth-of-focus scales. It takes a 52 mm filter, which is means I don't have to acquire a new set of filters just for it. Without doing side-by-side testing, it seems like by 55 mm AI Nikkor (macro) is a tad sharper. On the other hand, the 55 is AI, not AF, and my eyes are not as good as they used to be, so having that quick autofocus is a good thing. A word warning, close in at wide aperture (2.8 through 1.8) the depth of field gets real small. You might want to practice a bit before you need to shoot wide open in order to get a feel for what your depth-of-field is going to be. Bottom line, use this lens correctly and it will reward you with sharp subject focus and beautiful out-of-focus backgrounds.

I love the lens. I never knew how fun it could be shooting with a 1.8.

I love this lens! Which is why it makes me sad that I can't keep it. I have a D3000 and bought this lens thinking it would work for it. Where it does work as a manual focus lens, it does not auto focus with the D3000. What a bummer! I plan on taking it back and trading it for the 35, but I have really enjoyed it while I've had it. I've been able to learn to take photos with a manual focus, and even the pictures of my moving six-month-old look good. The images come out needing very minimal edits and have the blurry background. It is a great portrait lens, and I'm so sad it doesn't work on my camera! I highly recommend this lens if your camera will work with it. And if you have a camera that it doesn't auto focus with but you don't mind the manual focus, you've found yourself a winner lens!

I bought this lens because I wanted to get back to basics in my photography. Having a fast prime lens in a short telephoto (on my D300) is how I first learned to shoot 32 years ago. It was more than I expected. This lens is the deal of the decade! It is so fast I can shoot night scenes with existing light. It also has a shallow depth of field for portraits and nature shots. Super small and light weight. It is once again my standard lens... i.e., the one that is on my camera by default. Having a prime lens forces me to be more creative and selective with framing and composition. I'm just speaking for myself here, but the wide zoom range of modern lenses was making me lazy. I would highly recommend to anyone wanting a high quality, low priced lens.
