Book Information

The following content was provided by the publisher.

My name is Christy Jordan and I like to feed people.

I come from a long line of Southern cooks who taught me home cooking is best, life is good, and there is always something to be grateful for. I created Southern Plate so that I could share the recipes and stories that have been passed down through my family for more than nine generations.

You won't find fancy food or new-fangled recipes in this cookbook--just easy, no-fuss Southern favorites such as Chicken and Dumplings, Homemade Banana Pudding, Aunt Looney's Macaroni Salad, Fried Green Tomatoes, and Daddy's Rise-and-Shine Biscuits. (I want to make one thing as clear as possible: How your mama made it is the right way I'm going to bring it to you how my mama made it, which is the only right way for me.)

These stories and recipes come from my heart. They are a gift from my ancestors, but the ability to have them heard is a gift from you. Take a seat at the Southern Plate table; you're with family now.

Review by Library Journal (2010-10-15)

Since Jordan's website (www.southernplate.com) launched in 2008, it has had more than 43 million visitors. Readers are quickly falling in love with her simple recipes, which beginning cooks can quickly master. Baked Ham, one of the easiest recipes, has only two ingredients, ham and syrup. Cooks who specialize in Southern food will find plenty of familiar recipes, e.g., Boiled Peanuts (also a two-ingredient dish), Hoe Cake, Aunt Looney's Macaroni Salad, Old-Fashioned Bread Pudding, and Chocolate Velvet Cake (there's also Tookie's Green Velvet Cake). Highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5★ by You Gotta Own It! If you have sworn off buying another cookbook(like I had) or just don't think you need another one, let THIS one be the last you own! This cookbook is unique: the recipes are easy, quick, and practical. You will find yourself saying over and over again, "Oh, I've always wanted a recipe for that!" Christy also adds a cupful of her good humor, kindness, and creative writing skills to her cookbook. It's not "just" a recipe book: its a book that really will make you feel like family. 10/05/2010
Rated 5 out of 5★ by You're Gonna Love It I checked this out from the library first, then decided that I needed to have my own copy of this great cookbook. It isn't just a cookbook though ... it has interesting stories about Christy Jordan's life and all from a Southern perspective. You will enjoy reading and cooking and eating! 01/12/2011
Rated 5 out of 5★ by Lived up to my expectations! I've been a follower of Christy Jordan's website southernplate.com for over a year now .. I've been fascinated by all the delicious recipes on her site so when I heard she was writing a cookbook, I jumped for joy! I knew it was going to be a great book but when I finally got it in my hands and looked it over, it met so many of my expectations and much more. True southern cooking, even truer stories about where the recipes come from (generations deep recipes). Some recipes I recognized from my Mama's cooking growing up .. how sweet the memories! I recommend this cookbook to anyone who is tired of the same ol', same ol' southern cookbook and wants something 'fresh' in their cookbook repertoire! Thank you, Christy for writing this book .. =) 11/04/2010

Rated 5 out of 5★ by Love It! I really enjoy this book. My first thought was I don't need another cookbook on Southern Cooking. I have so many. Then I read a review saying what a good cookbook it is so I decided I had to have it. The review was right. I love this book. The recipes give me new ideas and help me recreate a dish I have made before. I could relate to Christy. Living in the south, and cooking for her family. 10/11/2010
Rated 5 out of 5★ by This is one of the best Southern Cookbooks I have ever seen. Lots of great favorites, all made with ingredients most folks have on hand. There is also a story behind each recipe. This is not just a great cookbook, it is also a good read. It makes you feel like your sitting on the front porch with a glass of tea, talking to an old friend. This ccokbook is WELL worth the money! 10/23/2010
Rated 5 out of 5★ by Southern Plate Cookbook I love this book! Recipes are great, pics are great! Love everything about this book! 12/25/2010
Rated 5 out of 5★ by Southern Cooking Like it should be! It's a great cookbook. I bought it for my wife. Christy Recipes remind me of my Okie Grandmother kitchen back in the early 60's. And the Southern women I knew back then. The recipes are simple and not intimidating. Like 2 cups of flour, etc, etc, A whole list of things that most people don't have or have time for. Christy says get a box of yellow cake mix then add this. I showed this cookbook to the girls in the office, and had to order 2 more copies. my only complaint is that the book is to small. Not allowing more of her real Southern Charm to shine though. 02/21/2011
