In the last few years, I have had TWO Homelite Electric Mowers. One died when I tried to mow wet grass, the other burnt out when I tried to mow tall grass. So, I'm not saying Homelite makes an unreliable mower. It just so happens I've purchased that mower twice. The Black and Decker is a HUGE improvement. First, and foremost, it is MUCH lighter than the Homelite. Because neither are self-propelled, THIS MATTERS A LOT. Second, this mower has a bag (if that matters to you) and is a REAR discharge. I don't bag my clippings, so the bag went straight into my shed, but not having to deal with a side discharge like the Homelite makes it a lot easier to get in tighter areas. The B&D also seems to be more thought-out. For example, all four wheels raise and lower when you adjust the height, which is nice. It also seems like I don't accidentally unplug the cord from the mower as often, although I can't possibly tell you why that's the case. All in all, the B&D is a solid, lightweight, powerful machine with all the perks of an electronic mower with "next generation" features. This is, IMHO, the best electric mower on the market BY FAR, and well worth the nominal price difference!

I have a small house in Aurora, Colorado with a small yard. This mower is ideal. First, it is easy to set up - just pop in a couple of bolts. The handle can be folded up so the unit will park vertically, taking up less space. I sprayed the blades and undercarriage with Pam spray before using it and everything - dirt, leaves, grass - wiped off easily with an old dish towel. I am 76 years old and have advanced arthritis, so the mulching gfeature saves me doing a lot of bending over and bagging. I love being able to mow in one direction, then simply walk backwards and mow the next swath, keeping the cord always on the correct side. Speaking of the cord, I like the little hook on the handle where you can loop the cord and snug it so that it doesn't drop down. I have small stones scattered about. I try to pick them up but miss a few. Setting the height at mid-point (extremely easy to do) the mower sailed over the rocks while slurping up leaves and mulching perfectly. It's a gem.

Very good (though not great) electric mower

---QUALITY OF MATERIALS/WORKMANSHIP: Hit and miss. Some of the materials (e.g., the metal cutting blade) are solid and high quality but others (e.g., the orange plastic start lever) are flimsy and prone to damage. For example, the black rubber handlebar grip actually tore a few inches during my very first use of the mower. In general, the plastic and rubber materials are cheap and questionable, but the metallic materials are better quality and more reliable. ---EASE OF ASSEMBLY/SETUP: Very easy. All you need is a wrench (and maybe a Phillips-head screwdriver...I can't remember). (Note: Don't tighten the nuts too much--you'll bend/squish the metal beams.) ---WEIGHT: Very light. It's easy to transport and operate. However, because it's not self-propelled, you will indeed need to do some pushing. ---SIZE: Quite compact. The blade is not particularly long, which means that it takes more passes (compared to a mower with a longer blade) to cut an equal surface surface area. ---MANEUVERABILITY: Because it's so light and compact, it's generally very maneuverable (i.e., easy to push, turn, pivot, etc.), though I wish a self-propelled version of this particular mower existed (for not too much more money, of course). ---ON/OFF: Because it's electric, INSTANT on and off with the flip and release of the start lever. ---POWER: Because it's corded, plenty of constant power, even on my thick, crabgrass-ridden lawn. I purposely chose to get this corded version to avoid the frustrations associated with a battery-powered mower (e.g., less/inconsistent power, expense of battery replacement, time to recharge, limited operating time, etc.). ---CORD USE: Quite cumbersome. I underestimated how annoyingly cumbersome it would be to actually mow with a corded mower. I suppose it's the trade-off for not getting the battery-powered version, which present even more frustrations. Besides, I expect that I will become progressively accustomed to the cord. (Incidentally, the more your lawn is strewn with trees, bushes, rocks, flowerbeds, decorations, etc., the more cumbersome you will likely find the cord.) ---MULCHING FEATURE: Excellent at mulching, even my thick, crabgrass-ridden lawn. This is the first mower I've used with this feature, and not having to regularly empty a bag almost makes up for the cumbersomeness of the mower being corded and not self-propelled. ***BOTTOM LINE: At such a reasonable price, this is a good (but not great) mower. It is my first electric mower, and despite the few gripes I have about it, it's generally a nice mower to transition from the archaic and environmentally unfriendly gas mower that I had before. If (a) you have a small to medium lawn, (b) your lawn is relatively free of in-grass obstructions such as trees and shrubs, and (c) you don't mind pushing an albeit light but not self-propelled mower, you will probably like this mower quite a bit. I am ultimately happy with my purchase.

The box was a little banged up so I was concerned but the mower was in perfect condition. The small amount of assembly required was simple enough for me to do myself - probably took me longer than it would have a man but I got it done. I really like the fact that it is lighter weight and moves smoothly. I know I have to watch out for the cord but it's so much better than having to worry about keeping gas in the garage. I was a little surprised that there was not an electrical cord included. Overall I'm very pleased

Let me start off by saying before mowing with this mower, I have never mowed a lawn in my life and I am over 40 years old! Now having said that, I found this mower to be VERY easy to operate. I don't have a huge yard. (A 100 ft. cord suffices for me.) This mower cuts like nobody's business! This was the first cut of the year for me so the grass in my back yard was kind of thick with sticks and pine cones included. This mower ran right over them, and mulched to perfection. I haven't used the bag at all, as I think I prefer the mulching feature. The cord was no problem for me either. If you can vacuum, you can use this mower. The only adverse thing I have to say is, I wish a cord would have been included with the mower. Thankfully I had already read another review informing that this was the case, so I knew to purchase one. Other than that, this is mower is perfect. It starts EVERY TIME by just pushing the lever when you're ready to start mowing. When you release the lever, it stops. Simple as that. Don't hesitate for another second to buy this mower!

    • A. Plug you extension cord into a 115 outlet and then into your mower. Slide your extension cord around the cord holder on the handle. Lift the plastic handle toward the top of the mower and you`ll go. Make sure you start mowing at the house outlet and mow outward avoiding the cord.

    • A. You just plug it in and pull the handle and it starts. Let go of the handle and it stops. It is that easy ! If you use any big amount of cord like over 50 feet, use heavy duty cord so the mower gets the proper amount of power.

    • A. It starts by pulling on a large trigger. When you let go of the trigger, the spring returns it to the off position and the blade stops immediately. It does note in the owners manual that a small spark from the motor may be seen through the top of the motor. That is normal due to the motor having to brake the blade so quickly. It is barely noticeable.
