About this item

Much like 2001's "Songs I Heard" and 2004's "Only You", 2009's "Your Songs" finds vocalist/pianist Harry Connick, Jr. coming up with an urbane and passionate set of American popular songs and contemporary pop classics that he both performs and orchestrates. While his previous recordings leaned toward the classicist side -- "Only You" featured songs of the '50s and '60s -- "Your Songs" features a more eclectic mix of standards and pop songs with Connick's own lush orchestration lending an overall aesthetic of languid romanticism. To this end, Connick turns Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are" into a kind of Herb Alpert-inspired '60s pop nugget and, conversely, the Beatles' 1964 classic "And I Love Her" gets a kind of '70s Latin lounge feel with classical guitar flourishes. However, Connick isn't only concerned with reworking tunes in unexpected ways; on the contrary, longtime fans of Connick's swinging neo-crooner work will be pleasantly surprised by his straightforward takes on "Just the Way You Look Tonight" and "Some Enchanted Evening." Similarly engaging are his renditions of such rock-oriented tunes the album's Elton John title track, his low-key version of Don McLean's "And I Love You So," and the Carpenters' "(They Long to Be) Close to You." Ultimately, "Your Songs" is a classy and feel-good stroll of an album. ~ Matt Collar, All Music Guide

Listening to Your Songs is like stepping into a time machine. Harry Connick Jr. does not loose the general essence of the music but rather gives it an upbeat modern feel. Enjoying the cd has been a great way to lift my spirits. I find myself leaving it on for long periods of time as background music. I know that it may not be the most modern music available but who says that something old has to be bad?

I didn't know a thing about Harry Connick, Jr., when I received this album to review, so I had no expectations. I've enjoyed it! It's full of familiar classics, which I liked. I like to play it while I go about my day - it's soothing and relaxing. There are no big artistic changes made to the songs, which I appreciated, and Connick's voice is pleasant without being especially distinctive or distracting. The "big band" sound of the backgrounds was familiar and calming as well. Recommended.

These are ALL the songs I love, and Harry puts a dreamy twist on them. One of my favorites is where the Trumpet kicks in on the song “I Can’t Help falling In Love WithYou”. Oh my. This CD just makes me feel like “Marsha Brady” cause all I can think of is “DREAMY”. I feel like I could rise up to the skies and dance on the clouds. I have heard and listen to MANY Harry Connick Jr. songs but this by far is his BEST work EVER! Harry gets you relaxed after a hard day of work, all you need to go along with this CD is a Bubble Bath and some Bubbly! I can just dance along, this is the type of music that just fills your soul and travels in your blood all the way to your heart. It is JUST THAT GOOD !!!!

Love the voice!!! I was surprised when I listened to this cd. I do not think that I have heard his music before, and I cannot believe that I have lived without listening to this wonderful voice until now! I just want to melt when I listen to him! The voice just flows right over me, then through me!!! I do not care for a couple of the songs on this cd, but I do not like them no matter who sings them. The cd has a feel of night club type music. This d would be great listening to while doing anything not fun-like the dishes! Would definitely improve my attitude while doing chores! My favorite song is “Can’t Help Falling in Love with You”! I also really enjoyed “All the Way”! He is someone that I would enjoy seeing live in concert!

This album is amazing. Harry's voice just instantly calms you. The choice of songs that he had picked to review were impecable and I was shocked that he could sing an entire song in spanish. I listened to this album while I was driving around garage saling with my daughter and it was cut short buy my 14 month old deciding to take a nap. The sounds of Harry's amazing voice lullabied my daughter to sleep. This album is no longer leaving the car. When she gets fussy I have the soft sounds of this album to relax me and my daughter. If you have never listened to anything by this artist but would like one to try, this is definately the one!
