Your Songs

Much like 2001's "Songs I Heard" and 2004's "Only You", 2009's "Your Songs" finds vocalist/pianist Harry Connick, Jr. coming up with an urbane and passionate set of American popular songs and contemporary pop classics that he both performs and orchestrates. While his previous recordings leaned toward the classicist side -- "Only You" featured songs of the '50s and '60s -- "Your Songs" features a more eclectic mix of standards and pop songs with Connick's own lush orchestration lending an overall aesthetic of languid romanticism. To this end, Connick turns Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are" into a kind of Herb Alpert-inspired '60s pop nugget and, conversely, the Beatles' 1964 classic "And I Love Her" gets a kind of '70s Latin lounge feel with classical guitar flourishes. However, Connick isn't only concerned with reworking tunes in unexpected ways; on the contrary, longtime fans of Connick's swinging neo-crooner work will be pleasantly surprised by his straightforward takes on "Just the Way You Look Tonight" and "Some Enchanted Evening." Similarly engaging are his renditions of such rock-oriented tunes the album's Elton John title track, his low-key version of Don McLean's "And I Love You So," and the Carpenters' "(They Long to Be) Close to You." Ultimately, "Your Songs" is a classy and feel-good stroll of an album. ~ Matt Collar, All Music Guide

I love Harry Connick Jr., but I did not love this CD. It is definitely worth listening to but did not earn a long term spot in my CD changer's rotation. I think Harry is at his best doing original material rather than putting his classic/jazzy spin on the music of other greats. He has a style all his own and should capitalize on that and original material. If I had to pick one song on the CD as a favorite, I would say 'Besame Mucho' is the winner, so smooth. My least favorite was 'All The Way', I love the song and Ol' Blue Eyes, but Harry's version was so similar to Frank's that I didn't see the point in his singing it. Usually when Harry does his own rendition's of famous songs, I end up loving it, but this CD just didn't do it for me. As a side note, my favorite Harry Connick Jr. song of all times is 'When My Heart Finds Christmas' from his CD of the same name. I LOVE THIS SONG!!! It is the only Christmas song I listen to year round, if you haven't heard it, you're missing it. I still love ya, Harry! :)

Listening to Your Songs is like stepping into a time machine. Harry Connick Jr. does not loose the general essence of the music but rather gives it an upbeat modern feel. Enjoying the cd has been a great way to lift my spirits. I find myself leaving it on for long periods of time as background music. I know that it may not be the most modern music available but who says that something old has to be bad?

Relaxing and Familiar

I didn't know a thing about Harry Connick, Jr., when I received this album to review, so I had no expectations. I've enjoyed it! It's full of familiar classics, which I liked. I like to play it while I go about my day - it's soothing and relaxing. There are no big artistic changes made to the songs, which I appreciated, and Connick's voice is pleasant without being especially distinctive or distracting. The "big band" sound of the backgrounds was familiar and calming as well. Recommended.

A Melodious Delight!

I received a copy of this album to review and I am extremely pleased that I did! I had not realized that Harry Connick, Jr. was a singer as well as an actor and, thus, had never heard his singing voice. After playing the album, I was immediately reminded of Frank Sinatra--he has the same smooth voice and sultry old-fashioned sound. Although all the songs are covers of songs originally done by a variety of other artists, Mr. Connick manages to unite all these songs with his mellow and warm vocals. The songs are both relaxing and upbeat--guaranteed to make the listener smile. I especially love the songs "All the Way," "Can't Help Falling in Love with you," and "And I Love Her," but all the songs on this album are delightful! I highly recommend this album to those who love movies like "Singing in the Rain" and Frank Sinatra, as well as anyone else who loves good music with solid vocals.

I thought this would be a good background CD for when company was over, quiet reading times, etc. The song titles were familiar to me and I was looking forward to great, Harry Connick renditions. This was true for some of the songs and I did enjoy several, particularily All the Way and Mona Lisa. I'm a Carpenter fan from way back and his cover of Close to you, did put a smile on my face. However, other songs just left me cold. The renditions of And I love her and Your song, left me cold. Highlights to some of the songs were the trumpet solos and that does not say much for the voice. Really, this is okay for background, but not for serious listening. I'm not sure who was responsible for the cover choices, but I really think Harry Connnick Jr could have found songs better suited to his voice and talent.
