Customer Product Reviews

Rated 4.3 out of 5 by 3reviewers.
Rated 4 out of 5 by Spoiler Alert. The Things They Carried is 256 pages long and is a really attention grabbing book. It is a book about the Vietnamese War in the point of the view of a character named Tim O'Brien. It has many soldiers in the book and it includes each one of their own stories. This book to me was really interesting but it did get a little confusing because of the code words used to describe things. But you could easily google the word to find its definition. For the narrator, Tim O'Brien, the major conflict was deciding on going to war. He didn't want to at first, he felt as if he was too good for it. I didn't like the part where the book is describing a baby water buffalo being tortured and then killed. It was really sad. The book includes many vivid and unpleasant events like the buffalo being killed. There's much description about death. There is also a lot of use of bad words within the characters in the book. The book to me was confusing at parts, especially when the author was describing what true war stories are, which is the theme. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read realistic fiction stories, not someone who doesn't like to read that because I know that I got upset when discovering which parts were made up once I finished the book. I think it made if feel like what I read was all a lie and it was upsetting because I really got into the book as if it really happened. 12/17/2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by An Amazing Read! "The Things They Carried" was an amazing read! The novel begins in the middle of solder's war experience in Vietnam. It is essentially a variety of short stories that are connected to one another about the soldier, Tim, or his soldier friends and what they had experienced or felt during the war. At first, the beginning chapters start telling you what each soldier carried mentally or physically to the war. Then it gradually progresses into the short stories that tell you what the person experienced. I would definitely recommend this novel to anyone who wants to escape the real world for a while. It is jam packed with details and makes you feel like you're actually in the novel itself, experiencing everything along with Tim. Once you get pass the first few chapters, you would have a hard time putting the novel down! If you're looking for a book on violence in the war, then this one is not the right one for you. This book is basically teaching you about morals or a simple lesson in each chapter. The books makes you realize how the soldiers felt when they got drafted into the war or how they felt during the war. What they had to do to survive and make it out of Vietnam in one piece. It also makes you realize that the most important things in life are the little things that are most often ignored. 03/06/2013
