About this item

FADE IN: INTERIOR: Early morning in CELL BLOCK D, MANHATTAN DETENTION CENTER.

Steve (Voice-Over)
Sometimes I feel like I have walked into the middle of a movie. Maybe I can make my own movie. The film will be the story of my life. No, not my life, but of this experience. I'll call it what the lady prosecutor called me... Monster.

Monster, written by Walter Dean Myers, is about sixteen year old Steve's murder trial. During the story, Steve wants to write a movie about the trial. This book is written to show the script with the dialog, cues, different angles, etc. Everything each character says is put into the story which makes the book go on quite slow. About a week long trial is stretched out to fit into under three hundred pages. Characters are given their short description, then they are put into the story. Each character has a chance to speak to the jury about their own version of what happened. As they speak, the book turns into their point of view, making it first person. Characters all have their own way of speaking - there is a clear difference between the voice of the District Attorney and the voice of an inmate, and this is shown well here. The way Myers writes the book as if Steve is writing his movie script is different than your regular every day book. It is written with very few descriptions, but it doesn't really need it. The way the story goes makes up for the lack of descriptions and different settings.

An excellent book that touches on many social issues including race, stereotyping, and our criminal justice system. Written in a different style from much traditional young-adult fiction, this book is engaging and thought provoking. I would recommend this book to students who might struggle with traditional text and who might be engaged and motivated to examine issues of justice and injustice, as well as discrimination and bias against youth. Certainly not a book that can be read without spurring discussion... use it to that end, and this book is extremely valuable in many different contexts. David C.
