Be careful - while all packaging and item descriptions state that this is an update for Vista, this is not entirely the case. You can only use this as an upgrade from Vista Professional. It cannot be run as an upgrade from any home version of Vista. I learned this the hard way. The only way that I can use this version is to do a brand new install, which means that all settings, programs and files will be lost. If you are running a home version of Vista, you can only upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium or Ultimate.

Upgrading Windows

Windows 7 Professional workes with both Windows XP and Windows Vista. It does not work with Windows Vista Home Premium. If used, the custom option must be installed. Which means all data must be backed up on CDs, or an external hard drive first, because all previous register settings are removed. The majority of the programs must be reinstalled. Also, you may have to download Microsoft software to connect you printer to Windows 7. If you are running Windows Vista Home Premium purchase Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade, or Windows Utimate Upgrade.

Not helpful for windows 7 starter

I purchased this product thinking it would upgrade a windows 7 starter. It would not. I will only upgrade a vista and probably xp. To upgrade a windows 7starter, you must first buy the windows "anytime upgrade" for about $80, and then buy the upgrade you need for about another $90 plus.

I enjoy windows 7 from a programmers stand point. A lot of people feel it’s more for the new comers and I would have to agree but if you know what you’re doing there is so many easy tweaks that can be done fast and easy. Vista took a lot of time to tweak things and XP don’t even get me started. The only problem I have found was trying to assist a friend that has vista none of the invites would work it would let me put the password in and then the assist window closed and wouldn’t go to her computer I’m sure I will work around it. I think that considering XP, and vista that an upgrade to windows 7 should be a lot cheaper, Just because all of the problems with them. Overall this is the best OS on the market I’m not sure the next OS from Microsoft will get me to use it considering I like windows 7 so much.

I had Windows XP on my laptop and stepped up to Windows 7 Professional and was really supprized at how much faster the boot up is and how much faster everything else opens and runs. I also really love how much better looking the graphics are. I used Microsoft system advisor first to check my laptop to see if Windows 7 might have any potential problems, and everything checked ok, so I loaded it on to my new hard drive and fired it up. I have not had any driver problems with it at all. There is a little bit of a user learning curve, which was expected but over all it has been a great system up grade that I would recommend. (better than going out and spending 500 - 800.00 dollars or more for a new Computer)

The best Microsoft Operating System so far!

I never really got into the whole Vista thing and was reluctant to move away from XP but once I got a laptop with this operating system installed all of that changed. I am now completely smitten with this operating system ( I am allowed to say that as an IT Technician!). I believe it is the small changes that have made a huge difference such as the new task bar, dragging windows to the side and the top of the screen to conveniently place them, seamless backups and other little quirks that make it work well. I have found it to be incredibly stable and installing a printer was literally as easy as plugging it in, the drivers were already on there! Well done to Microsoft for releasing the best OS so far. Look forward to future releases.

I upgraded my computer from windows vista Home Premium to Windows 7, and I couldn't be more happier! My computer works faster with 7, there's hardly any errors (and when there were errors, a special feature of Windows 7 called Action Center found and fixed every problem). And what's better is, since I'm a college student, I only paid $64.95 (There's no tax). And, for an extra $5.95, I got extended download service which allows me to redownload the software for 2 full years after I bought it, giving me peace of mind if something goes wrong with my computer. And If you're a college student yourself, you can pay the special price I did by going to the following page: http://www.microsoft.com/student/en/us/software/windows/default.aspx

Very easy to use better than vista in many ways. I'm not a big Microsoft fan but given the options better than typing every thing in to make it do what I want. I currently have xp - vista & 98 with win 7 on my xp computer & purchased it at 50% off not a bad deal considering it is Money Hungry Microsoft. One good feture is it block known drivers that are incompadible. Networks easy to setup and many other good security stuff.

Best Operating System Ever!

Windows 7 Professional is my best companion. After seeing Windows XP Professional go, it broke my heart. Knowing that Windows XP is being supported until 2014, I am quite eased. I use Windows 7 Professional to complete the work I need whenever I want and wherever I want. Windows 7 has more features that makes me older applications run amazingly--called Windows XP Mode! When 7 saves me extra bucks from going out and buy third-party DVD software. Windows Movie Maker makes editing videos fun and enjoyable. And enhanced Windows Action Center warns me of any issues on my system. Windows 7 is the best operating system I've ever used! Yes, I'd prefer this over an expensive Mac systems.
