Politics make strange bedfellows - but a ruthless congresswoman and a vengeful gangster? Contemporary politicians could take some lessons in scheming and deception from tough guy George Raft ("Oceans 11") as political boss "Mr. Ace" and Sylvia Sidney ("Sabotage") as Margaret Chase, a ruthless congresswoman who runs for governor without the Ace stamp of approval. Can her subterfuge undermine his power? Will his threats of blackmail force her out of the race? Can their growing love for each other make them both winners, or will pride and anger turn them into losers? Raft worked with director Edwin L. Martin, a prolific film-maker in the '30s and '40s, on several films, including the film noir features "Nocturne" and "Johnny Angel." Sylvia Sidney, a well-known leading lady from that period, can be seen more recently as Juno, the caseworker from the afterlife, in the 1988 mega-hit "Beetlejuice." Released in 1946, "Mr.Ace" was very ahead of its time with its sophisticated view of male-female roles and feminine ambition. It's a refreshing, grown-up antidote to all films in which the woman inevitably sacrifices her career for her man.
