Empowering women to end poverty and conflict Often people speak about books that have changed their lives - this book has the power to change the world.I was introduced to Nicholas Kristof's book through and insert in the New York Times Sunday edition a few weeks ago, promoting an online course taught by the author. The subject of the course was empowering women to become advocates for the new abolition movement – to end the human trafficking of girls sold into slavery and ways to end the cycle of poverty. I was riveted by the individual stories of women from villages and towns around the world and their struggles to fight their way out of abuse, unimaginable poverty, disease and modern-day slavery. The course was based on Kristof’s book.Nicholas Kristof and his wife, Sheryl WuDunn are both reporters who have long written on the plight of poverty stricken societies - the violence and fanaticism that often result from these conditions and the challenges facing women and girls – often uneducated, devalued and abused.After reading this book, there is no way to go back to doing nothing. I have vowed to tell everyone I know about this book, to share it with family, friends and colleagues. To work in my small way to some how make a difference in the lives of the women around the world who have not had the opportunities I have. This is my first step. Please read this book and help spread the message that to educate women and girls around the world is to help change the world. 10/02/2009
Must read !!! What a book! I saw the writers on Oprah, and ordered the book right away. If this book does not change your life in the way you look at things, nothing will.There are many opportunities listed at the end of the book for all of us to help these women.
