this is a very well made bike rack that gives any purchaser the security and value of bike racks costing 3 times as much. it mounts easily to my truck hitch without any movement once the pin/bolt has been tighten inside of the hitch. the fold down carrier arms are excellent and the ability to tilt this rack without being required to touch/remove your mounted bikes makes this product a steal for your money.

Top Notch Rack!!

I've used this rack for several months now both on short and long distance car trips. I've nothing to say but good about it. It is well built and loading and unloading bikes is easy and fast. The tie down straps provides a secure platform. I've only put 2 bikes on it so far but carrying 3 bikes won't be any problem. The ability to lower the rack away from the rear door or trunk without removing the rack from the car is a real plus and takes only seconds. Those who complain about wobble are probably not securing the rack to the receiver hitch properly. I use the 1-1/4 hitch access. The smaller anti-wobble bolt which Allen supplies reduces wobble to a minimum. Just be sure to use the 1-1/4 inch hole on the rack with the 1-1/4 inch bolt. Also ensure that the thicker end of the bolt is pushed all the way through until it comes up against the hitch receiver, then tighten down. I'm glad I spent less than half on this Allen rack than would have cost me for a Thule or Yakima. It works well.

Great Value, buy a couple Walmart Plastic bungies

Best Deal for the money. Have taken two bikes to the Lake. Worked great! Love the fold down aspect so one can get in the back end of the SUV while bikes are mounted. The rack performs well. Based on bike shop guy's recommendation, used some duct tape to wrap a hand towel around the post, this padding protected the bike from scuffing. (wife has a new, expensive Electra, no scratches allowed). The mounting bolt has an extra anti-wobble thingy built in if you tighten the bolt enough. A bungie helps keep front tire from wobbling. True on any rack. Walmart sells bungies that have plastic or hard rubber hooks. They are large and won't scratch your bike. As with any bike carrier, always use a Bike Rack Adapter Bar (goes from the handle bar neck to the seat post) when mounting a ladies bike. Walmart's inexpensive Allen adapter bar works OK, but... recommend getting the Yakima branded one at a sport shop. The Walmart Allen model has bare metal that could scuff your bike, the Yakima one is coated with something that resists scuffing. From experience, mount the Front tire to opposite side of car as your exhaust pipe. This prevents frying your bike tire.

  • A. Yes, if properly fastened to the car. You need additional straps not supplied to tie them down so they don't sway back and forth. An assortment of bundgies work good.

  • A. I have driven nearly 80 with no concerns. Just make sure the lock bolt is tight. Take some tools to check it periodically.

  • A. When installed properly, the rack will be safe at 65 mph. I live in Florida and recently traveled on I75 at 70 mph with no problems. It is recommended that an additional strap be used to prevent the bike(s) from swaying (mentioned on instructions).

  • A. It feels fine, I do not drive slow and most of the time the trails are far from my house, I think it is a sturdy rack, it is just not user friendly for getting it on and off and for getting it to fold back so that I can get into my hatch.

Will the tongue length clear the spare tire on the back of my Rav4?
by an anonymous customer 6/8/2010
6 answers
  • A. you need 5" of clearance from the end of receiver and straight up. Inside 5 inches you will be cutting it close to the tire. I can't see the receiver in the picture but if it is tucked in underneath it might not work unless you have and extension.

  • A. I suggest you purchase a "Spare-tire" mounted rack. If you do want a hitch-mounted rack the vertical post of the rack extends 6 inches past the receiver (i.e. it depends entirely upon the location of the receiver).

  • A. You may need a hitch extension. Depends on how far the tire sticks out. From the end of the hitch tube to the inside of the vertical tube, it' 7 1/2 inches.

  • A. I have a Toyota Rav 4 2003 and I use the rack on it. I had to get an extension which I found at Harbor Freight about $16. The rack works great

  • A. Probably not without an extension. I use it on an Isuzu Trooper - with an externally mounted spare tire. To use the rack as it came out of the box - I had to remove the spare and toss it in the back of the Trooper. I purchased an extension/adapter from Harbor Freight (http://tiny.cc/hitchadapter) which works great.

  • A. I doubt that it will work with your Rav4. I bought this rack to use with my Ford Ranger, and was hoping it might work with my Jeep Liberty with the rear spare tire. It doesn't even come close to reaching the receiver on the liberty.
