About this item
DVD, DAVID SHEPARD
The Van Beuren Rainbow Parade: In 1934, the esteemed Burt Gillett (who had helmed Disney's smash The Three Little Pigs) was hired to orient the Van Beuren Studio toward less amorphously improvisatory, more solidly naturalistic Hollywood cartoon technique. The recognizably human-like figures interacting with Felix the Cat in Bold King Cole are tip-offs of a newly expanded vocabulary, much as the pirate adventure The Goose That Laid The Golden Egg demonstrates considerably sweeter tone, the golden goose-fruit served up as a Depression cure-all. The Odd And The Outrageous: The fanciful self-parody of In A Cartoon Studio, where the whole laborious bread-and-butter process of creating animated shorts is gleefully caricatured, the grand satire of grand opera in Opening Night, and the outlandish gnomic Holy Wars in The Sunshine Makers are just three tidbits of beloved esoterica that came to us from the now nearly forgotten New York City based Van Beuren Studio. Max and Dave Fleischer, Van Beuren's competed with its neighbors by producing Aesop's Fables and off-the-wall pictures starring Tom and Jerry (not the can and mouse, but a Mutt n' Jeff-like Homosapien short-tall duo), imbibed with casual surrealism and out-right oddness.
