About this item

Patriarch Steve Preston goes missing and worried mom Emma (Ida Lupino) sends eldest son (William Shatner) in search for his father. Suddenly, a dying, eyeless Steve returns and demands that the family: "Give Corbis what belongs to him!" before dissolving into a gelatinous meltdown. Corbis (Ernest Borgnine) is a Satanic priest hell-bent on recovering a valuable book listing the names of those who sold their souls to the devil... a book that resides with the Preston family. Mark refuses to hand it over and puts up a brave fight, only to wind up an unwilling sacrifice. Occult expert, Dr. Richards (Eddie Albert) and Mark's younger brother, Tom (Tom Skerritt) plot to free the Prestons and destroy "The Devil's Rain," a bottle containing the souls of those already damned. The battle rages as the elixir is released and a bloody rain of devilry and malevolence is loosed upon a screaming, melting world.

This movie has William Shatner AND Oscar winning actor, Ernest Borgnine. You can't go wrong with that combination.

I was recently looking through the movie selection at and came across The Devil’s Rain (I didn’t even know it was ever released on DVD!) and decided to order it. Even though it is most definitely a B-movie in every way, I’ve always liked it. I was eight years old when I saw The Devil’s Rain in 1978 and the imagery of the film has stuck with me ever since. I never forgot the eyeless, melting worshippers or Corbis (Ernest Borgnine) as a possessed, goat-faced, satanic priest. The film is about a 300-year-old satanic priest named Corbis that is trying to hunt down a book that contains the names of people that have sold their souls to the devil. It stars William Shatner as Mark Preston and Tom Skerritt as Tom Preston. It also features a small cameo by Anton Zsandor LaVey (if you know where to look, that is) who also served as the films technical advisor. Like I mention earlier – this film is a low budget, B-movie in every sense of the word. The acting leaves much to be desired (though Borgnine isn’t too bad), the story is almost nonexistent, and the production value is pretty shabby. There are two scenes where you can easily see shadows of the camera and film crew. Borgnine’s creature make-up is really good, but the rest of the effects are barely passable. Despite all its faults, I really do enjoy this film. But a lot of that may be because of my childhood memories of it. I’d recommend this film only to those who appreciate B-grade horror films.
