Although National Velvet was the first starring role for 11-year-old Elizabeth Taylor, the early part of the film belongs to Mickey Rooney in the showier role of Mike Taylor, a headstrong English ex-jockey. Soured on life by a serious accident, Mike plans to steal from the country family that has taken him in, but his resolve is weakened by the kindness of young Velvet (Taylor). The two find a common bond in their love of horses. Velvet wins an "unbreakable" horse in a raffle, and enters the animal in the Grand National Sweepstakes. Though Mike is unable to ride the horse, he aids Velvet in her plan to disguise herself as a jockey; she wins the race...but the story isn't over quite yet. Co-starring as Velvet's mother is Anne Revere, who won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her performance. National Velvet is based on the novel by Enid Bagnold. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide.

Star in my eyes.........Elizabeth Taylor I felt kind childish buying this movie,but once I watched it I realized this movie is for any age..and I'm 20. I recently got hooked on Elizabeth Taylor and can't stop buying her movies....lol. This movie called "National Velvet" is a great movie with a great story line. Elizabeth Taylor and Mickey Rooney are almost like a mini Taylor and Burton later on in life....He'll try to tell her what to do but, she ends up doing things her way. You should really get this movie though if your a fan of Elizabeth's because, no collection is complete without it. Love you Elizabeth :)!!!!! 03/11/2009
National Velvet This is a wonderful film for families and children. In this story, we meet Velvet who loves horses with a passion. She falls in love with a horse, that is a little wild, and wins it in a lottery that was designed by her father and the man that owned it to get rid of the horse! What a lovely story about passion, love, family and how one little girl can live her dream! She believes so much in this horse, that the man that was supposed to ride it in the race, didn't believe in it and Velvet knew she had to make the ultimate sacrifice and ride in the race! She cuts her hair, pretending she is a boy and wins the race, only to collapse at the end! The support of her family, especially her mother, through this whole ordeal is breathtaking! Definitely, a classic movie, one which everyone should own! 04/17/2011
