About the Album

The title Cash for Kenya, despite the subtitle "Live in Johnstown, PA," may cause confusion, so it should be explained that this video captures a concert given by Johnny Cash at a church in Pennsylvania as a benefit to raise money intended to build a hospital in Kenya. The concert occurred in September 1991; according to Cash's son, John Carter Cash (who participated in it), that intention was only a dream of Cash's friend, the Reverend Jack Shaw, at the time, but "Now, that dream is becoming a reality," and the Cash estate's proceeds from the video will go toward the hospital. The show itself presents a 59-year-old Cash, who was at a near-nadir in his career. Six months earlier, he had released The Mystery of Life, his final album in an unsuccessful stint at Mercury Records; it wouldn't be until another three years that American Recordings would begin his final comeback. Of course, whether his records happened to be selling or not, he continued to tour extensively, both with the Johnny Cash Show (including his wife, June Carter Cash, and her sisters, Anita Carter and Helen Carter, billed here as the Carter Family) and with the Highwaymen. His set in Johnstown was geared to its setting, with a heavier complement than usual of country gospel material and frequent references to faith, appropriate to a performance conducted under a giant cross. Playing in church did not prevent him from singing "Folsom Prison Blues," however, and playing in Johnstown, famous for its flood, made "Five Feet High and Rising" inevitable. The one-hour performance gives a good sense of what a typical Cash concert was like in this period, when a mature and assured -- but certainly not polished -- performer was playing for his fans, for charity, and for his God. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide
