Rated 4 out of 5 by TonyBlue87 Great, If You've Played The Game
I've always been a bit of an animation geek, and after loving Dead Space the game, I was definitely intrigued by this movie.
Downfall is simply the prequel to the Dead Space game. In this film you see the events that lead up to the exact moment when Isaac Clarke arrives at the beginning of the game. The backstory behind the crew of the Ishimura is explained, and you get to witness the entire alien takeover.
The animation in this film is top-notch. It doesn't move with the same fluidity as say Afro Samurai, but the characters are all unique, memorable, expressive, and convey a true sense of emotion. This film also has some of the best voice-acting I have ever heard in an animation. Never once does a line sound phoned-in, and the quality never faulters as each character goes through a variety of emotions.
The script is a little basic, and some may say it falls on simple brute/militant tactics to convey the story. Characters are tough, no-nonsense space marines, and their dialogue doesn't show very much depth. Adult language is thrown around like cheap candy and some lines sound like they're pulled straight from Aliens. But when the voice-acting is as well done as in this movie, it's easy to forgive the otherwise commonplace plot.
This is definitely an adult film; violence and gore fills about 75% of the film's duration, the themes of mutiny and insanity are brought up multiple times, and views upon religion and faith can be a little harsh when used outside of the context of the film. In other words, don't get this for your 12 year old because "the game was so awesome" (which 12 year olds shouldn't be playing).
This movie will not revolutionize the world of animation, and it certainly won't revolutionize the methods of storytelling, but, if you have played through any of Dead Space and you want to know just what happened before you got there, then Downfall will be a great (and only) way to get the answers.

Rated 4 out of 5 by MusikEnthusiast947 Would rather play the Wii Prequel..
I Loved Dead Space on the X-Box 360 and bought this because it has the events leading up to Issac's arrival on the USG.
I was not blown away by this though. Don't get me wrong it is worth seeing. I just feel maybe I would enjoy the Wii title: Dead Space Extraction which basically has all of these events unfolding in a video game.
I do think I might watch it again just to see if I feel any different about it...
