I bought a tetra aquarium that came with this filter. This because my wife won 4 beautiful common goldfish in a festival. I really didn't know the adventure and sacrifices I was about to face. Well first I bought a five gallons aquarium but a week later I had to invest in this 10 gallons aquarium. Still, it doesn't keep up with my sudden conditions. This filter moves only 90 gallons per hours (gph) while I'm needing at least 100 gph to keep a safe water quality for my goldfishes. I've read a couple of reviews and I'm not saying this is a bad filter at all, its good, I know because it keeps the water in neutral conditions for my fishes but right in the limits of neutrality. If you're buying this filter or came with your aquarium and you have more than two goldfishes I recommend to buy the 10-20 gallons one. That one moves at least 110 gph, perfect for your goldfishes. In general, the 5 to 10 gallons proved to be a good filter to even maintain my fishes alive. :) That's good!

Decent filter, but not above 10 gallons

This filter is decent, but it's way too small for above 10 gallons. Other than that, it seems to work well, and I like the bio-cartridge it comes with. Changing the filter cartridges is easy-peazy.

I bought a GloFish aquarium kit that came with a Tetra Whisper 2-10i Power Filter and my tank was really gross after a few weeks. After cleaning, it would go right back to being disgusting within a couple of days. I bought the Aquatech 5-15 for $11 and it has done wonders! It has a 3-stage filtering process and works 100% better for my 5 gallon tank. My fish and I are much happier now and I highly recommend AquaTech products over Tetra any day. Just remember to take care of the filter and clean it inside and out every 3-4 weeks to get the best results and life expectancy out of the product, I use a simple bottle brush and warm running water. Replacement filters are $7 for a 3-pack, which will last 2-3 months.

NOTE: IF YOUR FILTER IS NOT WORKING WHEN YOU PLUG IT IN, THERE IS A 90% CHANCE YOU DIDN'T PUT THE TUBE THAT GOES INTO THE TANK IN ALL THE WAY. After playing around with this thing for 30minutes, I pushed the tube in harder and it made a different, bubbly noise and next thing I know the water is flowing like it's supposed too. Make sure you prime the filter first by filling it with water!! And your tube is pushed in all the way before you complain!! Note I also have the old version of the filter, so it looks a little different but works the same.

  • A. fill the chamber with water until it overflows, plug it in and within 10- 20 seconds the water should start flowing.

  • A. You must install the filter according to the instructions, and I think you aren't priming it by pouring water into the filter, plug it in, and wait for the loud noise to stop (this noise is the filter clearing the tube of any air.

  • A. Step One - Mount it on your tank. Step Two - Take the Filter Cartridge & rinse it under your sink faucet until the water rinsing through it is clear, @ first it will be almost black, this is normal, it's just the dust from the Carbon. (You don't have to rinse the Bio-Fiber, but I would anyways.) Step Three - Put the Bio-Fiber in the filter with the plastic frame facing towards the back of the filter, it goes all the way @ the front wear the return path to the tank is, then take the rinsed Filter Cartridge & put it right behind the Bio-Fiber with the blue mesh side facing towards the back of the filter & the plastic ribbed side facing towards the front of the filter. Step Four - Take a cup & scoop some of the tank water up & pour it into the filter, this is referred to as "Priming", fill it up & it will let any water that it doesn't need back into the tank, this step MUST be done, if you don't prime this filter it will make a rattling noise while the Impeller knocks from side to side & eventually causes itself to break. Step Five - Plug the filter up & enjoy your clean tank. Also Remember - Change the Filter Cartridge every month for best results, if you notice the flow of water from the filter slowing down, unplug the filter, take out the Filter Cartridge & rinse it until it is visibly clean, then put it back facing the correct direction & plug the filter back up, if that doesn't help restore the water flow, then disassemble the whole system & clean all the parts & then reassemble, & always remember NEVER replace the Bio-Fiber, if you notice it's gotten clogged unplug the filter, take out the Bio-Fiber & rinse it a bucket of water from the tank, NOT from the sink, sink water will kill the beneficial bacteria growing on the Bio-Fiber, then put it back in the filter facing the correct direction & plug the filter back up.

  • A. Mine shorted out after 4 years. I suggest that you exchange it for a new one, as these filters are very high in quality. Don't buy the ones in damaged boxes, though!!

  • A. The filters should be back to back with the gray biofilter in front (toward the tank). Did you fill the filter with water before turning it on? I don't know that not doing that would cause the filter not to pump but it is supposed to be filled with water before turning it on.

I have a guppy in a bowl right now, but plan on getting a 10 gallon tank and a few more fish. (not gold fish though). Is this tank too strong for a guppy and is it too big/small for a 10 gallon tank?

  • A. If the flow is too strong, just lift the the intake do-hickey (yes I know, it's not aquatic terms, but i don't know what it's called) It adjusts the flow. I have 18 platy fry in my 5 gallon and I maneuvered the intake tube so the flow is almost null.

  • A. It's fine for a 10 gallon tank. It's probably not too strong. The fish can get out of the way if they aren't too stupid. I doubt it would harm your guppies.
