I just bought one of these yesterday so I have something for camping or if the power goes out to help keep cool. It does appear to have a hole on the side of it for plugging it into an outlet if you so choose. I have not tried it, as mine is using rechargeable batteries. The hole has the symbol for a 12V 500MaH Positive polarity plug, so I would say yes it can be used or plugged in if you spend extra on the cable. I'm testing it now to see how long it lasts on a full charge of my batteries, so will post again later perhaps and let people know about battery times. It does have a high and low setting, and I have it on high (testing the batteries at moment), and it moves quite a bit of air for its size. So far I am pleased with this fan. I might note that you have to use a large screw driver or coin (I used a penny) to open the compartment to put in the batteries, but it is not complicated (same to close it back up). I got mine for power outages and camping, and am using rechargeable D batteries. I've heard you get less time from rechargeable than alkaline batteries, which is why I'm testing the battery longevity as I'm writing this. I might post later and let everyone know how 8D rechargeable batteries did for me.

We found out it was going to be a very hot weekend and we were camping without electricity. I got online and this fan at WalMart came up. I had just 3 days before we were leaving, but I looked into site to store. It was available. I was able to pick it up a day later. It requires 8 D batteries. It worked like a charm! It was warm when we went to bed in the camper and it kept us cool most of the night. I turned it off in the early morning hours. It had slowed down, but the temp outside had also cooled. It folds up for easily storage. It ran quietly. And the price was right. This would not be a good choice if you needed a fan to run continuously, day and night. I would guess you can get 8-10 hours off the batteries.

I am surprised with the air flow that comes out of this fan. You can compare it with a fan that has a plug, but this one does not. The fan has two settings high and low. I am a diabetic and I live in Mobile, Alabama. When the power goes out, it is really hot here in summer months. In the event of a power outage, I will be cool for sure. I used the back of a fork to open the battery compartment and I purchased size "D" batteries for the dollar store. The fan is running well and I buy more batteries for future power outages. If you do not want to purchase this fan online they are available in sporting goods department in your local store. Thanks, Wal-Mart for offering this great product.
