b. 15 February 1899, Lodève, Hérault, France, d. 23 July 1983, Paris, France. A composer of many classical pieces including an opera and ballet, and choral and instrumental music. From 1930 up to the early 60s, he contributed the scores to French films such as Quand J'étais, A Nous La Liberté, Orphée and Belles De Nuit. He also wrote the music for numerous English-speaking films, including several classic Ealing comedies. His scores included Dead Of Night, Caesar And Cleopatra, Hue And Cry, It Always Rains On Sunday, Another Shore, Corridors Of Mirrors, Silent Dust, Passport To Pimlico, The Queen Of Spades, The Spider And The Fly, Cage Of Gold, The Galloping Major, The Lavender Hill Mob, Moulin Rouge, Roman Holiday, The Wages Of Fear, Father Brown, Rififi, The Witches Of Salem, Gervaise, The Picasso Mystery, Bonjour Tristesse, Heaven Knows Mr Allison, Heaven Fell That Night, The Innocents, The Mind Benders, Thomas The Impostor, Therese And Isabelle and The Christmas Tree. The haunting theme from Moulin Rouge (1952), with a lyric by Bill Engvick ("Whenever we kiss, I worry and wonder/Your lips may be here, but where is your heart?"), became a hit in the USA for Percy Faith and his Orchestra, with the vocal by Felicia Sanders. A record of the title music from Bonjour Tristesse (1957), with words added by the film's screenwriter, Arthur Laurents, was popular for Gogi Grant.
